    Movie "Unknown"

I saw the movie "Unknown" with Liam Neeson and January Jones on Saturday. I probably would have waited until it came out on video, but for one reason. The movie is based in modern day Berlin and one of the supporting actors is Bruno Ganz as Ernst Jurgen a former Stasi agent turned private investigator who assists Neeson in determining what happened to him.

Just the scenes in Ernst Jurgen's apartment are worth the price of admission. The inside of the apartment in former East Berlin is a throwback to DDR days. The camera pans the room and there are a wall of books, a cluttered desk and then a cabinet on which are all of the mementos of Jurgen's MfS service including a 25 year mini-dagger and a Kampforden. It's the most sympathetic portrayal of a Stasi character in any movie I've seen. There is an interview with Ganz in English at: http://www.traileraddict.com/trailer...iew-bruno-ganz

There are several iconic scenes, mostly in East Berlin, of the Hotel Adlon, Brandenburg Gate, the TV Tower, the Victory Column, etc... At the end of the movie the camera sweeps across the Mitte ending on the TV Tower.

      Kevin,

Interesting thread. I didn't know the film was set in Berlin. I'll have to see it for sure now.

      Regards,

      Gordon

Bruno Ganz was also Hitler in 'Downfall', which was an excellent movie. He certainly seems to be racking up those nasty sort of characters. I will definitely have to see it when it comes out on DVD or HBO. Fare thee well...... Chris

Not to give too much away, but he actually turns out to be a sympathetic character and in the end a victim.

Since watching Unknown I've had the opportunity to watch Bruno Ganz in Downfall, the story of the last day's of Hitler, and he was magnificent in that movie as well.

Ganz was very convincing as Hitler in Downfall...

Ganz is a great actor, and Downfall is a great movie!
And Unknown seems to be worth watching aswell!
