I'm spending a dreary Sunday afternoon browsing the net for NVA pictures and came across this photo. It would be interesting to hear from our NVA forum menbers about their memories of the activity portrayed The use of the pole to maintain alignment is interesting. I'm assuming that the guy second from the left and the one on the right are wearing flag holders? Also, The group of soldiers in the right background (marching towards the camaera) appear to have something on the front face of their Stahlhelm. I first thought it was a glare but closer examination is leading me to believe otherwise. Any thoughts?

Genosse
I knew the photograph but I am always glad to see it again . Iif you notice the surface on which they are marching, this is likely to be Schönefeld airport in preparation for the 7th of October parade (at a guess). These guys are definitely a Fahnenkommando. The oddity is there being a second Fahnenträger, but I remember that Torsten had told us that they would train extra people just in case someone was sick at the last minute, and the Fahnenkommando have some of the most difficult drill to do, and all the eyes are on them.
As for what is on the Offizierschuler helmets, I can answer that question:
numbers!
Why it was done, is not clear to me as they do not appear to be in order, or indeed to be chalked on all helmets.
My original guess was in order to tell people off e.g.
"You, number 123! You are out of step! What do you think this is: a decadent bourgeois promenade? We are the NVA, Genosse, not the Bundeswehr . We CAN march! "

Hi Matteo,
first of all, you are right, this is Berlin Parade training at Schoenefeld Airport ... but now to your mistakes ... ;-)
These guys (in your photo) are not Offiziersschueler, but they are officers from the Militaerakademie: notice their officer shoulder boards and most importanlt, their daggers!!
There is order to the numbering of the helmets ... there is a Roman Numeral on the side of the helmet, which denotes their row and then there is an Arabic Numeral at the front of the helmet, which denotes the person's place in that row (counting from the left to the right).
I do remember that we got those numbers put on our helmets as well for one day, but this was quite early on, when the marching blocks were first put together ... I guess, the Militaerakademie Officers probably did not much training prior to being posted for intensive training to Berlin just before the parade, which is why the numbering thing was only done at Schoenefeld Airport ... we had already done at least two weeks of almost daily training prior to going to Berlin.
Cheers, Torsten.

I would NOT dream of demoting the Genosses Offiziere der Militärakademie!
And given that we are on the subject... more photographs of parade training at Schönefeld, dug up in my archives
