Modern Germans are tearing down old DDR buildings like this school building more often along with many former TR buildings. I once heard that in Halle the three hands statue which was erected in 1968 was taken down in 1990s as modern Germans are increasingly tearing down more DDR buildings. You are lucky to get this bronze Hans Beimler plaque from that old school along the school photos and documents. Yeah I do remembers the former Republik Palast building was torn down in Berlin few years ago. This building was now gone from Berlin.

    Hi James

Here are two of my favourite DDR buildings ( still standing )

The Messehochhaus in Leipzig ( aka Wintergartenhochhaus ) finished in 1972

The building of the former Karl Marx Univerity in Leipzig ( now a television building ) , also finished in 1972

Hi Johan, Thanks for posting the pictures of two tall Leipzig buildings that are built in 1972. I have a large DDR stamp collection. There are different DDR buildings and statues that are featured on DDR stamps. I will dig out in my closet for DDR stamps including the pictures of Halle three hand statue and Lenin statue in Alexanderplatz in former East Berlin. I hate to see those DDR buildings gone but some DDR buildings still stands in today's eastern Germany. I will try to scan or take pictures of my DDR stamps. Thanks,James

          Hi Johan,

I have commented before and will say it again - what you have is not a collecting tank. What you have is a true Museum preserving much of the former normal day to day life as it was in what formerly was East Germany. You have managed to assemble a remarkable and exceptional collection of artifacts from that cold war era specific to East Germany and its People.

Hans Beimlers' son is well known to Star Trek fans- (Deep Space 9) AND he is sometime visitor to this forum. The fate of the original Hans Beimler in 1936 IS very interesting. His file was NEVER released by the KGB-even in the heady "open" days of 1991-3. Prof. Chris Andrew tried to obtain it I beleive.

Are you sure it's his son or is it his grandson. Hans Beimler died in 1936, Hans Anthony Beimler of Star Trek fame was born in the 1950s in Mexico City, "the son of a Spanish Civil War refugee and an American painter". See: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=182865

I have asked the guy I bought the gouping from about those strange photos
with the students , wearing military stuff , today I recived an answer .
Those students where taken part of the Pionier manoeuvres ( Pioniermanöver )
, organised by the GST , the so called '' Vormilitärische Ausbildung ''
The specific operation name for this event was '' Schneeflocke ''
and took place around 1980-1982 .
I also told him that one of the students was wearing a TR Luftwaffe buckle , he told me that the teachers would not have known this , otherwise they would not have allowed it .

The german text of the reply

Another photo from this Pionier event

Another photo from the student with the Luftwaffe buckle

                  Regards , Johan

I'm sure his grandfather had removed the swastika and the boy told his teachers, that it is the buckle of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft "Young Ornithologists".
