I was starting to feel alone in the world... thought I was the only one interested in collecting DDR/NVA etc. items.

Does anyone know of a motorcyclist's license/certificate for NVA/Grenztruppen riders? I'd like to own one if they exist. Also looking for other motorcyclist specific gear- gloves, the plastic later-issue helmet, etc.

Any training manuals would be of interest as well and maintenance manuals for the MZ's.

I would also like to welcome you to the forum. There are some forum members who own NVA vehicles but I don't remember anyone posting much on motorcycles. I suggest that you do a search on the forum for your area of interest.

I have a NVA motorcycle, a 1975 MZ TS 250a. I bought it while I was stationed in Germany. I have some other NVA motorcycle stuff; from photos, gear to a few manuals. I have never seen another one here in the states, that doesn't mean there isn't any though. There are always quite a few for sale on ebay.de. I was glad to be able to get one while I was there.

Rode, sounded and smelt just like a two stoke. Haven't rode it in a while due to deployment, and buying a Yamaha R6 (faster and a bit more stylish).

Hello Kraftradfahrer,

The only way for you to get a motorcyclists license/certificate is to find a Wehrdienstausweis of a person.
There were no specific certificates issued but after passing the required training and exams an entry was made in the Wehrdienstausweis for the specific type of military vehicle one was certified to operate.
Main requirement was a valid (civilian) driving license, either attained before being called up/signing up or, in some cases, obtained during basic training.
The only vehicles, to my knowledge, for which no driving license was required, were tracked vehicles. So, in my case I have the certification to drive a T-72 tank (and only this, officially) in my Wehrdienstausweis. I know people, mostly professional soldiers, who have certification for 8 or more types of vehicles.

If it helps I can send you the technical details of all five motorcycles in the service with the NVA/GT in 1990.

With ref to manuals I do not have any specific NVA manuals but would advise to look for the excellent " Wie helfe ich mir selbst - MZ Motorraeder" from Neuber/Mueller. The were published in the GDR by Verlag Technik. My issue is from 1988 and covers the MZ TS125/150, MZ TS250/1, MZ ETZ 250 and ETZ 251. The authors were both engineers at the factory.
