Here is a nice little booklet for tourists who wants to go to the DDR .
    I think this was printed in 1978 ( 32 pages )
It has tourist information , where you can sleep , rent a car etc.

      Genossen,
The large scale maps are good, they show as much detail as their Small scale maps.

            Very interesting piece!
In 1998 (or 1999?) me and my wife went on a trip thru Germany (mostly east) and camping fees were lower than in 1978 ... we were paying about 10-15 DM for car, tent and 2 persons. And one interesting thing: I had an old ADAC atlas with marked campings, and there were many many in the former DDR, but in real life several of those were just non-existent - disappeared in the forest Were these places just abandoned, like some factories and other facilities we saw, or were there in the atlas also camp places of FDJ, which are now closed? We also found a camping or two which had all the facilities, guests, but noone to operate it, so we could sleep there for free ...

Yes, and the old Rolleiflex camera is neat, too.

Fascinating! I had no idea one could rent a car in the DDR, especially seeing how it's citizens had to wait years to get one themselves. Of course they only rent Ladas, the top of the line for the eastern bloc.

There were hundreds of campsites in the DDR, some were good and some were not so good ... they were split into different categories. A must for campers was a fold out campsite map that was regularly updated and sold in the ddr. This showed all of the sites with facilities and categories, etc. Of course, many of the campsites just simply closed down after the wall came down, but some still exist. I will be spending my summer holidays with my family this year at two campsites in the DDR that are still operated and that are very good. I visited both campsites during the summer last year to make sure they still exist and to see what facilties they now have .... but you will not get much for the equivalent of 10-15DM these days .. Cheers, Torsten.
