    Buchenwald slide

Included in the batch of Wachregiment slides that I have posted in another thread, I found a lone slide from the 1960s of a Fahneneid in Buchenwald (that's where I think that monument is).

This was the benighted period when the grey belt was worn on parade too. Notice that one of soldiers holding the flag and swearing (partially hidden) wears Fllieger Kragenspiegel.
The piping of the uniforms is obviously not white but I cannot think that these would be Luftverteidigung soldiers as I presume they would have worn the plain collar tunics (and the officers the open collar ones).
So my best guess is that these are Grenzer with a Grenzflieger thrown in for good measure.

Notice that the sling for the flag is black and not black. This is understandable as before professional NCOs obtaining the privilege of wearing officer-quality uniforms, the Unteroffizier carrying the flag would have worn a black belt. Perhaps they had not got round to replacing the flag-slings yet.
    My own is brown

      Great photo Matteo,

Actually, I believe the dark collar soldiers and officers are indeed Luftverteidigung. They would have worn the same uniform as the Land Troops, except piping would have been blue and not white.

      Again, great photo.

I am becoming dyslexic ... My students get an extra 15 minutes in the exams if they can prove that they are dyslexic. I want to claim the same and see how the University would cope...
I meant to write "black and not brown"...
Alternatively it could just be old age...

I am not convinced by the Luftverteidigung either...
              Sorry Michael

                  Tony,

Thanks for the heads-up. David H. and I also communicated on this and he too set me straight.

But, who the heck are the blokes in dark collar?
                  They are not infantry.....

The quality of the slide is what it is. As you can see it has suffered some damage over the years.
The only possible solution is for the GT Green to have come out a bit blue. That is what I thought as the only possibility

Cleaned the picture up a little. It would appear the Officer and NCO with there backs to the camera are GT and standard Airforce to the right.

It was quite common that various units stationed in the same area were sworn in together. I took part in one in 1988 when I was pulled into the company which did the basic training with new recruits in the regiment. The oath-ceremony was held in Anklam and the training companies of several units in the area were sworn in together. i don't know what the rules where because when I was sworn in it was done at the barracks. Probably because there were a several hundreds to be sworn in at Unteroffiziersschule III.
I do not recall which units were in Anklam but in the area was air defence, air force, signals, and many others. I was more interested in getting all guys back together, hopefully not totally wasted, and to arrange a share of the several hiding places (for bottles with a certain content) on the Ural truck.

                          Thanks David,

Good job. I concur it is now much more apparent the chaps in Dark Collar are Grenztruppen.

                          Dag,

Thanks for imparting your personal knowledge and experience, which helps better understand and comprehend what the photograph depicts.

note the NCO holding the standard has his side arm .iv'e noticed this on other swearing in photo's that the NCO is armed to protect the standard.
it might be interesting to start a thread showing swearing in photo's and other pictures related to the standard flag.

Here is a B&W photo of a simular ceremony at Sachsenhausen from the 1960s photo book Soldaten des Volkes. Looks like an artillery piece in the background so my assumption is that it's an Artillery unit:
