    a well-outfitted bunch

The 3 VM admirals have had many uniforms for sale on ebay.de and ebay.com....They must have been a well-outfitted bunch within the constraints of socialist economy for sure.

Maybe they each coincidentally had weight gaining and losing issue(s).

According to my Volksmarine sources there were extra uniforms kept for Admirals at the Kommando der Volksmarine in Rostock- Gehlsdorf. That's how the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg aquired Admiral Ehm's uniform in 1990 long after he had retired. It was from this store of uniforms and donated by the Volksmarine to the museum.

However the uniform displayed above has a far fetched set of badges not worn by any Volksmarine Admiral. For example I havn't seen photos of any VM Admiral wearing the Kommandanten von Kampfschiffen (Commanders of combat ships) badge. Probably because it wasn't award until very late, 1989-90 and was only worn by officers who were in active command of combat ships. It had to be removed from the uniform at the end of command. Likewise I haven't seen Admirals wear either the VM or Soviet Long Voyage badge and this one has both. And of course what Admiral's uniform would be complete without the VM Reservist badge!

          Hi Kevin,

The uniform on this thread is of course a "Put-together" for all the reasons you and other members have noted.

But you are quite correct about there being extra uniforms kept for General Officers. And as they continued to serve in the capacity of a General and/or Admiral over several years, the uniforms kept on reserve multiplied in number commensurate with changes in weight (girth). That is a fact. The accoutrements to be worn on these uniforms relevant specific serving General Officers also were kept in reserve.

So it was possible for there to be a greater number of these uniforms "Hanging" around than there were actual General Officers on active duty at any one time to wear them.

DaveM is quite right that over the years, for those that have followed ebay and some sites of some particular "Sellers" of interest; there have been an unrealistic amount of Open-collar era General Officer uniforms to come up for sale. And close scrutiny has usually proved them to be fakes. Even a few Dark-collar era ones in the last year or two appeared that turned out to be fakes.

Search the threads and members will find a thread or two where a DDR Sub-forum member has actually purchased fake tunics, hats or pants.

There are I'm sure still real one's out there. They probably will fetch a price accordingly.

The issue and question that concerns me most is the rumor that keeps circulating that there now are uniforms for sale - hats particularly, that are being produced in the former Czech Republic from unused original cloth stock.
