Kevin-- are you able to transfer stuff from NTSC to PAL and back? If so that would be great not only for getting this to our German members, but for getting Euro programming into a format that it can be watched on in the states.

It's quite probable that with that he would at least be able to watch it on his computer, I doubt greatly it would work on a Euro TV though.

You can take the DVD recording to any commercial recording/imaging shop and have it converted. Cost is minimal and I used do this from time to time - convert PAL to NTSC and the reverse.

But after buying an HD TV and HD DVD Player, a funny thing happened. I discovered the HD Format DVD Player plays PAL format DVDs perfectly fine on my TV.

I don't know if the HD TV's and HD DVD Players sold in Germany will do the reverse - play NTSC format DVDs perfectly fine. Perhaps they will, and perhaps they won't.

If I could just get the Player to translate German to English it would be a perfect world.

                    instead p.m.:

                    Thanks, guys.

it is not necessary to switch to the European (German) code. My DVD-player is switched code-free, so I can watch every DVD from everywhere... Kevin, I wish you could record it for me-or show me the link were it will be to find in the web.

At least it will work on PC, like "Kartoffel" already wrote.

The bigger problem is the language. But I learn every day from you...

                          Hello guys !
There was a documentary film broadcasted on French TV last night and there was something very surprising to me...
They talked about Harald Jäger who was in charge of a border crossing point that night of Nov. 1989... he decided to open the gates without any instructions from his superiors...
The guy is presented as a Stasi Lieutenant Colonel (Oberstleutnant) ...
But when he was filmed on Nov. 9th 1989 he was wearing an Oberleutnant Uniform from the Volkspolizei...
How can that be explained ? I 1st thought they got confused while translating the ranks, as oberleutnant is very close to oberstleutnant... but after some quick research on the net, it appears the guys actually was a Stasi Lieutenant Colonel !
Does this mean Stasi personnels worked undercover for other administrations ? But why was he assigned a lower rank then ?

                          Pics from the documentary film

                            Hi Olivier,

Thanks for posting this. It is very eye opening, but given what was going on, not surprising.

A thought about the uniform and rank situation. It is well known the Stasi had their own Customs uniforms - there are some out there in private collections and they are marked MfS.
They also had their own Signal's uniforms. Again they are maked MfS. It is suspected they participated in the Prague Spring offensive.

Given the above, it is probable they also had uniforms of every branch of service and used them when and where deemed necessary, to include Polizei.

About the rank. It could be the Stasi had their own regulation governing impersonation of other military organizations and ranks that could be used.

When I served in the US Army CID, I could and did impersonate other ranks in the Army from time to time, dependent upon the covert investigation in which I was actively engaged. I also impersonated civilian positions, such as a postal worker on one occasion. I was allowed to impersonate by regulation any rank below my own rank, but never above.
I also could impersonate any military or civilian occupation except that of doctor/nurse; and chaplain.

Perhaps something along these lines might possibly explain Harold JAEGER's appearance in a Polizei unifom and his wearing the rank of Oberleutnant.

It could also be something as simple as the rank worn that day was chosen based upon the role that was being played out.

I'm sure there is much more to it, but this could sort of set the tone for what was occurring. Just some ideas on the situation about which you posted.
