Berlin, July 21 (CNA) A segment of the Berlin Wall will be inaugurated at the 228 Peace Memorial Park in downtown Taipei on Nov. 9, marking the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the wall and friendship between the people of Taiwan and Germany.
Karl-Heinz Schroeter, county executive of Oberhavel, a neighboring district north of Berlin, promised visiting 228 Memorial Foundation Chairman Chen Chin-huang in April a segment of the Berlin Wall as gift to the memorial park in Taipei.
The Republic of China's representative to Germany Wei Wu-lien, on behalf of the foundation, accepted the 3.5 meter-high wall section from Schroeter Thursday in a ceremony in Oberhavel.
Schroeter told Wei that Oberhavel would be honored to have this historical symbol standing at a park dedicated to victims of the tragic 228 Incident.
The wall, which separated East Germany from West Germany for more than a quarter of a century, was brought down on Nov. 9, 1989, when East German authorities could no longer prolong its totalitarian rule against waves of protesters.
Over the years, this symbol of the Cold War has mostly disappeared from Berlin's landscape, while segments of the dismantled wall have been installed at parks around the world.
Oberhavel, for instance, has presented segments of the wall to parks in the United States, Finland and the Netherlands, in addition to the recent gift to the 228 Peace Memorial Park in Taipei.
