    need help with Medal ID

    Hello Friends,

As I do not have the latest Medal- i.E. bartels Catalouge and still work with the old 1999 Bartels Book..I need your help to determine the correct Catalouge No. for the Medal:

"Preis für Künstlerisches Volksschaffen" in silber. I.class

up front.. I do think its No. 31a in the old Bartels Book... as it has the year (1965) on it, what indicates it comes from the Timeframe 1955-1970 I think. It has the old Needle system..
and I also think its real silver..but it has no 900 Punze.

but a Friend of mine has a newer catalouge and says it is not No. a)..

    So I need you Guys..

    Regards
    Andreas

Andreas - I also have only the 1999 Bartel book. For those who may be unfamiliar with this medal I looked it up in Auszeichnungen der DDR and it's the Preis für künstlerisches Volksschaffen = Prize for Folk Artists established in 1950.

Cannot help with a detailed classification of your particular medal, but it certainly is a very scarce one and I have not seen it in real life before ... do you also have the award document to go with it? Cheers, Torsten.

I have just looked it up in the 2003 Spezialkatalog and it can only really be number 30a, the first class award, but there should be a silver Punze on the rim. Cheers, Torsten.

I have the old DDR Bartel of 1979.
In that they mention that the medal of 56-58 vintage the front has a emblem of the i quote " Sinnbild des kunstelirschen Volksschaffens"' the back has the inscription "Preis für kunstlerisches Volksschaffen 19.."
From 1959 on the front has the Tree of Life with GDR National emblem with
inscription "Für künsterlisches Volksschaffen" form 1959 tot 1965 the year of issue was stampend on the medal. The back shows a folkdancing couple.
The medal was issued to 5 individual persons and 3 Collectives a year
in 2 Classes with a price for 1 Class collective of upto 15000 M
                and 5000 M for individuals
2nd Class was upto 10000 M for Collectives and 3000 M for individuals.

The Price was created on 18 may 1955 and in 1956 it was awarded for the first time.
The Price was awarded for the best New creations, exemplerary Interpretation directional Scientific Investigations or exemplerary Cultural Artwork of the People. ( I hope I translated this good enough form German to
                english)

I hope I could help you somewhat in your quest.

(source Bartel /Karpinski Auszeichnungen der DDR 1979 page 111 and picture IX)

                Yours

... and thats the problem I have.. i cannot find any evidence of a 900 Punze..

The 1999 Bartels Book actually doesnt mention anything about a 900 Punze..only states "silber"

but then, the 1999 Bartels Book actually DOES mention when a Medal is or has a 900 Punze..like NVA Awards etc.

so thats something that puzzles me... I mean, maybe when bringing out the latest Medal Book..they had this Medal with 900 Punze and made it No.30a
but whats mine then??Silver with Year on it should also be No.30a right??

yes it should be, but according to the 2003 book, it should also have the Punze on the rim ... of course, your's is a good one and they possibly just forgot to stamp it?? Cheers, Torsten.

                        Hi Andreas,

please try it once more with the 900 on the rim. It is a very small number (appr. 0.7 mms high) below in the middle, only weakly distinctive.
Try it with a magnifying glass.

I don't have such a fine medal, but i have NVA "Verdienstmedaillen" and NVA "Medaillen für Treue Dienste" with the 900 on the rim, and I think, that they have the same numbers.

                        Regards
                        Uwe
