    Killer Artillery Hauptfeldwebel parade uniform!

First off i'd like to thanks everyone who posted picks and info this last year and a half that helped my complete my dream parade uniform. Like i said it's artillery and i think i have everything as is should be short of the helmet, which i have, though it has the net on it currently so i substituted appropriate visor instead. The tunic is dated 1980 and all insignia appears original and not sown through lining. It's all very wearable size 52 jacket and pants, size 10 parade boots, size 60 visor. I'd wear it but nobody was around tonight to take my pic but i'll post anyways. Thanks again, Luke.

Beautiful Uniform...sooo shiny, but shouldn't the visor be an Officer's visor with the silver braided chin strap?

How much did this cost you, and how long did it take to put together?

          Ian,

The visor cap is correct for the uniform. (Assuming it's gabardine - it looks like it in the photo. A wooly visor cap would certainly NOT be correct.)

The two top NCO ranks were authorized to wear officer wreaths, but the braided cords were worn only by officers & warrant officers.

          Luke,

I believe the Artillery marksman lanyard is not correct. This style of lanyard was not introduced until 1986, well after the elimination of cuff bars and color-piped insignia. For some reason, from 1961 - 86, they used the Infantry style lanyard for all marksmanship awards.

The kind you need is made from aluminum and has 14 knots. The 1986 style lanyards are made of a synthetic material and have 23 knots. The earlier lanyards are tough to find in the US, but they do turn up on German Ebay.

Otherwise the uniform is a great specimen. I have a Rear Services NCO parade tunic, but mine doesn't have the Der Spiess cuff tress or Dienstlaufbahnabzeichen.

Rev462, i agree with you too a point maybe even completly, Does an artillery cord exist with 14 knots? I think that's the main question here Don't forget that uniforms with white piping and no cuff bars didn't come out till 83 right? So was there was overlap of 14 knot cords and no cuffs bars or branch specific colored insignia between 83-86? Anyone else out there care to comment, Micheal, Torsten, Dag????? Thanks, Luke.

              Luke,

There was an aluminum 14 knot Artillery cord that was used from 1956 - 61. The badge itself has a completely different design from the later one, consisting of a flaming shell. (There is a WWII sleeve patch of nearly identical design.)

In fact, there were several different marksman lanyards used from 1956 - 61: Infantry (the familar crossed rifles design), Panzer (with a T34 design) and the above-mentioned flaming shell design for Artillery. The Volksmarine had their own versions for rifle marksmanship, Torpedo (which is nearly impossible to find) and Artillery.

After 1961 they were all discontinued except for the crossed rifle design. Then in 1986 they re-introduced the use of various designs with the nylon, 23 knot cord.

There would have been an overlap from 1983 - 86 where the 14 knot cord was used without cuff bars or color-piped insignia, but it would have been the Infantry style cord.

I don't know for sure, but it's probably a safe bet that leftover stocks of the 14 knot, Infantry style cords were used after 1986.

don't know about the artillery lanyard question, but the visor is correct for this uniform and rank. Cheers, Torsten.
