Stasi, East Germany's Secret Police - YouTube Video Movie

I stumbled across this today. It's a 60 minute movie called Stasi, East Germany's Secret Police which is broken up into six 10 minute segments:

Interesting , but it's a pitty that they didn't use subtitles when germans
are speaking , personally I prefer the german language .
I also think the Stasi ìs a little bit hyped at the moment .

It's hard to complain about free, since the DVD costs around $20. However there wasn't much I had not heard before except for the section on the Stasi prisons and Bautzen II. It was interesting to see the footage of the various Stasi buildings, but I wish it was in color instead of grey sepra tone. And what was all that counting in the background 1, 2, 8...1, 2, 8, etc?

I interpreted it as a replicating a "spy" transmitting a numerically coded message over the radio...
Presumably a reference to the "intelligence" work undertaken by the Stasi but I thought it rather silly any way ...
As for the black and white (grey ) overtone I think this quotation from a book I have just been lent by Genosse James is appropriate:

"... I cannot recognise my country from the way it is depicted in the press and media. We didn't just have autumn and winter. We had spring and summer too. Life wasn't just about the Stasi..."

Johan - Nice photos of the Museum in der "Runden Ecke" in Leipzig. I was there in 2007 and my wife and daughter waited patiently in the room where your second photo was taken while I toured the museum.

Matteo - True, not everything was grey in East Germany, however the grey tones remind me of Berlin (East and West) in the winter. Overcast skys, snow tinged grey by pollution, grey buildings, etc.
