    DDR naval peacoat

Today I've bought this Peacoat. At first I thought it was a Volksmarine peacoat but this jacket has to extra pockets there, it has got no kragenspiegel, the buttons are smaller and there are also small brass rings made in the holes where the schoulderboards would be attached. I've posted a simular peacoat (with 4 pockets) before on this forum, it appeared to be a BW jacket. But this peacoat must be GDR looking at the size label. I can't find any markings (stempel) in the inside (pockets).

Could it be NVA or could it have been issued in the DDR civil naval services? Any Ideas? Thanks!

Grenzflieger - Volksmarine uniforms and insignia are on of my collecting interests. Although I'm not an expert it ooks East German but not like any Volksmarine uniform I've seen. So it could be GST or for some civilian maritime/naval organization.

I would say definitely DDR. The material appears to be gabardine as in a naval officer overcoat. It is anybody's guess what it might be The red lettering on the label would indicate that it is not that early. Could it be that some Admiral had democratic inclinations? What size is it? I cannot read it.

Kevin - Volksmarine uniforms and insignia are on of my collecting interests too! Sometimes I have the impression VM collectors are just as scarce as the VM items. My first guess is that these jackets were not used by the Volkmarine. I was also thinking this jacket could be GST but I'm not sure, I don't have a GST peacoat in my collection so I can't compare it.

Iannima - The size is K52-1

Grenzflieger - It's good to talk to a fellow VM collector, of course fewer VM collectors means less competition. Unfortunately I have no references on GST or civilian maritime uniforms. I do know that there were specialized blue shoulder boards and cap badges for the professional naval staff of the GST. Considering the larger size of the uniform I suspect it was worn by this professional staff if it turns out to be GST.

            Hi,
does this have additonal vertical pockets on the left and right side?
I know I've seen these before...on this forum as well.
What's the tag say? No stampings inside?
If you look on 109 of Keubke's book...there is an Officer wearing something similar for Wetterschutz...I know this isn't the coat you've posted, but the pic shows the pockets I mentioned.
            Prost!

Kevin - I'm not an Einstein but why are the VM items without the competition so ... expensive Maybe we have been bidding against eachother on ebay?

I was thinking about the GST option. I've seen several GST jackets but as far as I know (and I haven't seen that many) they usually have an embroided GST logo on the sleeve, don't they? But again I'm not sure.

Grossmacht - Thanks for your reply. Yes it has additional vertical pockets. I didn't notice the simularity of this jacket with the photo in keubke. Main difference is the number of buttons and the fact that it isn't possible to put a fake fur collar on it. There aren't any stampings inside the jacket.

I guess it wasn't privately made... I do hope so

Does anyone know if and how GST jackets were stamped?

              Grüssle,

              Felix

Felix - I think part of the competition is with Third Reich reinactors and collectors. Many VM uniform items are very close in appearance to the WWII Kriegsmarine. The second reason is their small size they were between 16,000 and 18,000 most of their existance, so there is much less material out there than the Army or Air Force.

Didn't know that people use the Volksmarine state property for WWII reenactment / collecting. They should be prosecuted!! What are they thinking?
