Berlin Wall gallery gets anniversary facelift

RESTORATION work has started on murals painted on the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall, 20 years after the Cold War barrier fell, organisers say.

Completed in 1990, the 1.3km-long East Side Gallery is covered with paintings by 118 artists from around the world, inspired by the tumultuous emotions that marked the end of Germany's division.

But the concrete slabs running along the Spree River, which are a tourist magnet, have crumbled under the onslaught of weather, pollution, graffiti artists and plain neglect.

One of the most famous works captures Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and the long-time leader of East Germany's communist regime Eric Honecker sharing a passionate kiss.

Kani Alavi, the head of the artists' association at the East Side Gallery, which calls itself the world's largest open-air art gallery, said four of the original artists had set to work and another 82 had pledged to participate.

"They will paint the same motifs as they did in 1990 and that is a major victory for us," he said. "If they did not, we would probably not have the chance to preserve its authenticity."

The retouching work is to be wrapped up in November, in time for the anniversary celebrations of communist East Germany's decision to open the border on November 9, 1989 amid a peaceful popular uprising.

"I am excited and am particularly happy that the Wall will be restored like a historical monument," said Rose-Marie Schinzler, who painted two of the works.

But some artists have refused to join in the effort and are demanding €15,000 ($27,412) in compensation instead of the €3000 ($5482) on offer, arguing that they have not received a fair share of the Gallery's earnings over the years.

"We simply want total financial transparency for the artists," Bodo Sperling, who said he leads a group of about a dozen artists boycotting the restoration, said.

The despised Wall was erected in 1961 by the communist regime of East Germany to stop a mass exodus of its citizens.

Of the 155km of grey concrete that cut off West Berlin from its hinterland for 28 years and made East Germans prisoners of their own country, only about 3km in total is still standing.

It was chiselled apart by Germans from East and West euphoric over the opening of the border in 1989 and large slabs were sold off to foreign buyers.

Two decades on, visitors to the city centre often search in vain for the Wall and can rarely differentiate between the former East and West, both of which have seen a dramatic construction boom since the barrier was torn down.

Typical. They fail to see the free advertising benefits, and also have no morals with respect to the cause the monument represents.

My response to Bodo would be to selectively restore the wall to its original slate gray color (No mural) where each of the mural's for each of the artist's he represents is located. That they are getting anything at all to me is quite something. But then I don't know what they were given when they originally each contributed to the wall mural.

If I had the talent, I would have done it for no cost, just because of what it represents, and knowing I was getting free advertising at absolutely no cost. But that is probably why I am middle class, and always will be middle class.

      Faded Berlin Wall gets makeover

Michael, Don't beat around the bush, tell us what you really think! Got to love those temperamental artist types and their moral stands for more Euros.

There have been several articles on the East Side Gallery over the last couple of weeks. Here is another one...

BERLIN (Reuters) - Artists on Tuesday began repainting the largest remaining section of Berlin Wall with the murals they created after the fall of the hated symbol of the Cold War almost 20 years ago.

A 1,300 meter (4,265 ft) stretch of wall, the world's longest open-air art gallery, was decorated by 118 artists from 21 countries in 1990, but has since been damaged by the weather, exhaust fumes, vandals, and souvenir-seeking tourists.

The restoration work is expected to be completed in time for the 20-year anniversary in November of the fall of the wall which once divided communist East Berlin from capitalist west Berlin.

Artist Gerhard Lahr, 70, a children' books illustrator living in East Berlin, recalled the thrill of being allowed to paint a mural on the wall in 1990, where rifle-toting border guards had patrolled only months before.

"Just that we were allowed to go there, it was incredible," he said, as he started to repaint his work "Berlyn" under a cloudless sky.

The gallery was declared a historic monument by the Berlin city government in 1992 and has become one of the city's top tourist attractions.

However, not all of the artists were pleased to learn their original murals on the stretch known as the East Side Gallery would be erased -- and that they would be expected to repaint them.

Russian artist Dmitri Vrubel, who painted the famous image of East German leader Erich Honecker kissing his Soviet counterpart Leonid Brezhnev, has told German media he would not paint the same image as before.

The artists now working on their sections are using transparencies and an overhead projector to ensure their recreations are precise. Built by communist authorities who described it as an "anti-fascist protective barrier," the Berlin Wall divided the city for 28 years. Scores of people were killed by East German sentries as they tried to escape across it from east to west.
