    My only Surviving DDR items

I use to have a ton of unissued DDR items I got just shortly after the Wall Fell ranging from uniforms/ equipment / daggers /medals and insignia but lost it all to one of the major fires we had here in CA about 5 years ago. This uniform (the only survivor) was in my closet where as the others were in storage.

    That's a sad story !
But this one you have is very nice! I would only suggest to move the Sportabzeichen to the other pocket. Is the tunic unissued as the trousers? Because at a glance I would say it has the older embroidered collar tabs. Did you sew those on yourself or were they there already?

      Hi Joe,

sorry to hear about the items being lost. Will you be rebuilding that collection? Was it insured and if so, how did they determine the value? Cheers, Torsten.

        Fire

That is one of my biggest fears and concerns with respect to collecting this memorabila. If a burglar takes it, at least there is expectation of its survival.

But fire ..... "Poofff" and in the stroke of a pen the entire collection maticulously acquired and assembled over many years is gone - for good.

Sorry to hear about the loss. I too hope there was insurance. Though that certainly does not replace the memorabilia. I know I have some items in my collection for which money will never be a replacement. They are rare and I have no desire to part with them. There definitely is a risk with respect to collecting memorabilia associated to any topic of interest, be it military, sports or some other area of interest.

Thanks.... Yes the tunic is also unissued as is the breeches, I removed the tags and put them in the pocket when I use to wear it. The collar tabs are emboridered and were on the tunic as well as the cuff title. I added the shoulder boards to it. It's complete except for the tie with is just a clip on.
Thanks for tell me about the Sportabzeichen being on the the wrong pocket. I was thinking WW2. I got all these items from a friend of mine happened to purchace 2 warehouses just shortly after the Fall for helping him. There wasn't much info out on DDR uniforms then as I guess there is now. Everything I had was all unissued tagged or sealed. The medals I had were all still int thier plastic cases. I had some of the earlier mid 50s camo pattern but most was raintree pattern. I had enough uniforms to cloth a Squad.

Now here's the bad part that I cry over but have now learned. I did not have insurance at the time of the fire that took it all away, I figured I didn't need it and it was a waste of time. Well not only did I lose the DDR but I also lost alot of WW2 and family and growing up related items as well POOF ALL GONE...I may slowly rebuild my DDR collection but I know I'll never have half of the stuff I originally had which is sad...

            Genosse,
I apologize for your loss. I too lost my house to fire several years ago. Back then all my collectible fits in a contianer the size of a shoebox and they survived, but everything else was lost. It doesn't matter if you are a collector or not, they are still devestating and somehting no one should have to experience. I hope since then everything has gotten back to normal for you, and that hopefully you have plans to rebuild your collection, and I wish you luck in doing so if you do!

              Maxx,
Being a native southern Californian myself, I grew up with Santa Ana Winds, earthquakes and of course the wildfires. I moved up to the Bay Area a few years ago, right next to Oakland whose hills are constantly threatened with wildfires. We have great weather here, but it can turn on us in this vicious draught/drying out period, followed by fires, then of course like clockwork the rains come to cause mudslides. It never really occurred to me that it could all go away in an instant. I'm sorry to hear about your personal stuff. This is stuff which can never truly be replaced. I too have amassed enough in my collection to supply a battalion. I'm downsizing considerably.
If you need anything, drop me a p.m.

Thanks for the help I'll keep you in mind for sure.
When we had the BIG fire down here in San Diego when I lost the storage unit All of San Diego County was ablaze as well as all of Ca to. At that time we had the fighting forces so thinned out they had to let things burn. I have a friend who collects cars and he lost 4 of the 5 garages (about 60 cars and trucks from the 40s and 50s) cause the fire dept determined it wasn't a home. It get crazy down here, last Oct we had 4 fires going on 2 on Base 1 just down the hill from where I live and the other at the end of town. Thank God we had 2 super scoopers from Canada that took about 80% of the control cause they could go right out to the ocean and back in less then 8 min. instead of 20 for the others that had to fly back up to Ramona.
Since then I have tried to better prerpare myself and protect with insurance.

                  Collection Anewed

Well I've just added 3 new DDR Tunics to my collection. I've done part of my duty in rescuing them from Paul R's wife, wish I could have done more. They are Panzer/ Signal/and Pioneer. Also while going thru some files I needed for taxes I came across this Flag I completly forgot about in my briefcase.

Now I just need to find out what other goodies I can add to these Tunics. Will post photos as soon as server transfer is done.

Ok well here's an update look at my only surviving Grenztruppen uniform. With the help of a fellow Genosse here in the forum I've been able to correct it's look from the dating inside of it (1978) as well as demoting it from a Major to Hauptmann.
Now since my first posting to this forum I've been busy reclaiming the Peoples Property, which I've posted in another thread.
For this Tunic my Thanks goes to Justin

                              Looking good Genosse!

Now you just need a tie and I'd say this baby's finished

Then off to increasing combat readiness by getting the rest of the components (hat, belt, breeches, etc)
