    NVA repro rations

Hello all, I've been lurking here for a bit and figured it was time to join, now that I have something to contribute.

Anyway, I'm looking to reproduce some NVA (National People's Army) rations for a re-enactment this Spring. Specifically I need to have edible field rations; the equivalent to K-rations, MREs... individual sort if possible. (although group rations would be cool too)
And I was hoping that some of you could help me make them as accurate as possible.

I know that most of the contents were off the shelf items, which is good since I can buy canned meats and such.
I also know that there were several different types and categories, and this is where I need help.
I'm looking for contents lists, pictures or descriptions of labels, and pictures of the items themselves.
But I'll take any info or stories you have to offer.

I plan to relabel the cans (when possible) and create and label the cardboard boxes that group rations came in.
This in combination with the right contents (or very close substitutions) should make something close enough for eating.
The plan is not to make exact replicas per say, since I'm not trying to make money off these things, but rather have the food in my Sturmgepaeck look more realistic. Taste will vary from the originals since I may not be able to find the exact contents and/or manufacturing differences today will vary from the DDR plants in the 80s.

As an incentive I'll even make extra and sell them for cost to anybody who helps out... and wants one! Call it a bonus for being a contributing member.

    Thanks in advance,

Well, that could be interesting. I always thought the cans looked like cat food. Anyway, I will post what I can from my open case of rations...

Thanks for the very thorough pictures, Jeff.
That alone gets me close to making a usable ration! Can you tell me how many sets of rations (K-portions) came in a box? I was under the impression that it was 4 sets, but I don't remember where I got that number.

For the e-rations, does 1/2 mean that it is half of an E-ration? or is it half of the nutrition/calories of a regular ration?

Anyway, I think I have enough information to start collecting cans. Now I'm off to the market, to try and track down some German chow.

1/2 E-Portion means that you need 2 of them to have a complete Set.
2 cans had to be carried in the Field Pack and the opening was only allowed by commanders order. One Can was sealed in a plastic cover and contains 6 Packets of Kekskomprimat containing 3 blocks in each wrap so you had 6x3 = 18 Blocks in a box makes 36 blocks in a complete set. If you want to "trick" a buddy, let him eat 6 blocks, they have an approx. size of an oreo but not round, and half a bottle of water. After one hour he feels like he had a cow for breakfast.
            Nico
P.S.: I think to remember were I have them, maybe I get them tomorrow when I'm preparing Kassel.
