Belt lop holes and side stiching

    Genossen,
I have a II/1963 dated border guard EM tunic (unfortunantly though it has a massive hole in the back and small one in the front). So, I have a few questions (me with questions, what a surprise, huh? )

It has the belt hook hole sin the back and the reinforced stitching along the seams on the waist on the sides toward the front. So my questions are, up till what years were the belt hook holes present? were they only on EM uniforms or officers as well?

It also has the two-pieve collar tabs. When were these phased out?

Also, when did the change from all volunteers to conscripts and volunteers take place? I specificly mean when did they begin issuing different equipment for proffessional and non-proffessional soldiers.

ALso, the uniform is, I THINK wool, but it is much smoother than my other wool dark collar tunics form the early 70's, but it is rougher than all my gaberdine uniforms. Why is this?

    Thank you Genossen!

The belt hook holes were eliminated after 1963, I'd say no later than the 2nd half of 1964. The belt hook holes were present on both service (unpiped) and parade (piped) tunics - presumably so that parade tunics could be easily converted to service tunics by removing the cuff bars.

I have seen the holes only on wooly, EM tunics - never on an officer tunic.

The 2-piece collar tabs (and cuff bars) were phased out after 1965. Both service collar tabs (the ones with the mouse gray litzen) and parade collar tabs (with the silver, glittery litzen) were of 2-piece construction until 1965. Service collar tabs were eliminated completely beginning in 1970, after which the silvery parade tabs were used for everything.

Gabardine uniforms for career NCO's became available in 1964, which was the same year the single and double Winkels were introduced.

In my experience the material used for EM uniforms in the early 60's is heavier, more coarse and scratchier than later vintage EM material - perhaps the wool content was higher in the early days. (Although some synthetic was always blended in. You'll see the word "Perlonhaltig" on very early uniforms. "Perlon" was the name of a synthetic material, nylon I believe. Later on they used the word "Dederonhaltig" as they could not use the word "Perlon" - it was a copyrighted name and they came up with "Dederon" to evade copyright infringement issues.)
