    Police Unite Uniform Question

Could anyone provide information on the white uniform worn by police? I am wondering if this was a summer uniform or a formal jacket and if it was worn by both the VoPo and the TraPo.

Also, what sort of insignia was worn? Collar tabs and shoulderboards? Were other badges worn on the jacket too?

Maybe someone also has pictures that they could post of the jacket being worn.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    John

As far as I know it is a summer uniform for traffic wardens, that is how it is always described (Verkehrsdienstuniform). I don't think it was worn as a formal tunic and I doubt that the Trapo would have had it. I wish they did because the white with the dark blue would look ever so much better than with the Polizei green! But sadly no... I think it was intended for high visibility. Sorry to disappoint you.

I think I have one, like you mention. It has no collar tabs, only shoulderboards.
I can try to post some pictures later, since I'm going on vacation tomorrow and
      I still need to pack.

I took the time to make a quick photo of the tunic. I hope its the right one
and that it will help get a discussion going.

When I get back in about a week I'll try to make some more photo's of the
tunic and start a thread of its own.

          John,

I agree with Matteo. It is not a formal occasion tunic but was worn by those on traffic control duty. Every photo I have seen shows the white tunic being worn with shoulder boards but no collar tabs.

Also, the white tunic was worn with trousers and visor hat with white cover. I've never seen a photo showing the white tunic being worn with breeches or with shirt & tie.

Thanks for all the input so far. I still would love to see a photo. If this white jacket is only for VoPo would it have been worn with the regular VoPo pants? Shoulder boards but no collar tabs. I have seen white belts with a cross strap for sale sometimes. Would this belt then be worn with this jacket?

              John,

In the photos I've seen the white tunic is worn with the typical, Vopo trousers. If I recall correctly, no belts were being worn either.

The white "Sam Brown" belts & shoulder straps were worn by military traffic controllers. As the Bereitschaftspolizei were essentially military units, it's possible that they also wore the white Sam Brown rig. I don't know for certain, however.

White belts were also worn by EM's & NCO's in the Wachregiments for honor formations and by musicians while performing during parades & ceremonies.

I think we need not be to specific on how and for what these white tunics worn. They were definately worn by standard vopo and probably barrack police units, as to other police types ie. trapo, I haven't seen any photos (yet..).
I tend to think this tunic was quite often worn on an 'as ordered basis'.

Anyway here are a few photos.

This picture depicts more of what I'd call a formal occasion, where the tunic is worn as a form of distinction. In the original Picture the other units are in parade mode.....

This is a 1960's era picture (Im dienste des volkes) which clearly shows the white tunic being worn with breeches, whether this practice continued into the 80's I don't know.

The next two pictures show barrack police units (judging by the shoulder straps) on public duty, it is interesting to note the jacket is worn with the shirt over the lapel or shirt fastend with tie...

                      Hope this is of use

I too have a few of these...none of them however are marked MdI, but all are NVA.
They've got silver pebble buttons, so their not Volksmarine...Any clues? I don't think that the Vopo ones would have been marked NVA...but given the weirdness of DDR manufacturing...anything is possible. Similar to Stasi stuff beng marked NVA?

                            grossmacht,

I also have some of these white tunics marked NVA. They are not rare wih this marking. We have disscused them on the forum before but I don think that we reached any concrete conclusions as to why there were some marked NVA and some MdI. Be nice to sort that out.

                            Regards,

                            Gordon
