It turns out that I was incorrect about reference books on Russian awards. I bought a book on Russian awards, in German, while I was in Berlin last weekend and when I got home I put it away to look at later. Got around to that today when I arrived home from the monthly militaria show. The book contains pictures of just the badge I need for this uniform. All I have to find out now is if there are any more in the series, other than the two shown in the book, and decide which one to put on the tunic. If there are no other badges in this series I'll probably put the surface craft badge on it.

The book is a well known one that I often looked at but never bought until I saw it in the Flea Market last weekend at a good price. It is called
"Militärische Auszeichnungen der UdSSR" by Dietrich Herfurth. The badges are not commorative. They are awarded for long voyages on the same vessel. That actually translates into several voyages but I don't know the exact amount of dictance one must travel to qualify for the badges or if it is the same for both.

Since your question on the ribbon bar I've been doing some research into those who reached the level of Vizeadmiral in the NVA in the hopes that I can confirm the authenticity of this ribbon bar to my uniform. Should be finished in a couple of days and I will post my findings one way or the other.

Hi Gordon, so these badges are pretty much the same as the Fuer grosse Fahrt badge of the Volksmarine. Still kind of surprised that he would have worn the Soviet badge rather than the NVA badge? Cheers, Torsten.

It looks like it might be a für Grosse Fahrt badge, also know as a Long Voyage Badge. The badge measures 3.5 x 4.5 cm.

It would appear that the NVA badge was copied from the Soviet one. Not unusual for senior officers to be given badges from other WP nations.
To add a little to the thread, here is a picture of a Soviet naval officer wearing the Long Voyage badge making a presnetation to a teenage member of the FDJ.

Hi Gordon, just had a look in the herfurth book myself and it is not actually a long voyage badge, it is a badge for members either of the underwater fleet or the above water fleet, but it is not specifically for long voyages. At least that is how I read Herfurth's description in the book. I suspect that your officer will have served in the Soviet Fleet for a bit. Cheers, Torsten.
