Hey Stefas - Thank you very much for posting your interesting document and promotion shoulder board case. Very nice.
I did some research on the person and it appears that he made it to the rank of Konteradmiral. He was born in 1920 and his highest awards are VVO in silver and Kampforden in gold. And I think he retired in 1980. It also appears that he was in the Wehrmacht navy from 1940 to 1945 and joined the KPD in 1945...
I hope this assists you.Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did. Quote - Sophie Scholl - White Rose resistance group

If I understand this correctly, this officer survived the Wehrmacht Officer purge in the NVA and continued his service, unlike most former Werhmacht NVA officers, which by 1960 had been forced out of the NVA.
This would make him a most unique and interesting individual. Until now, I had mistakenly assumed the only former Wehrmacht general officer to survive the purge was a Medical Officer.
There is a book specific to general officers of the NVA - I need to locate a source and acquire a copy.Michael D. GALLAGHER

Hello Michael, that's correct. Most off the officers and Generals where forced out off the NVA.
But maat/obermaat is what I thought one off the lower ranks. The NVA had no problems with soldiers and unter officiere from the wehrmacht.Lots off NVA generals had these ranks in the wehrmacht.

Hi,
Maat and Obermaat are the lowest ranks for NCO's in the Navy (or the highest ranks for EM), in the German Navy between the "Stabsgefreiter" and the "Bootsmann".
US Navy: Petty Officer second class
In the book (see Post 3), I found some former officers:
Zorn: born 1912, 1944 Major, 1952 Generalmajor, discharged 1974.
Bechler: born 1911, 1943 Major, 1952 Generalmajor, discharged 1971.
Brühl,: born 1924, 1944 Leutnant, 1979 Generalmajor, discharged 1989.
And some more.
The other soldiers (Generals) were:
Adam: born 1893, 1943 Oberst, discharged 1958, Generalmajor (retired) 1977.
Korfes: born 1889, 1943 Generalmajor, discharged 1956.
Lenski: born 1893, 1943 Generalmajor, discharged 1958.
Müller (Vincenz): born 1894, 1944 Generalleutnant , discharged 1958.
Walther (Prof. Dr.med.): born 1895, 1945 Generalarzt, discharged 1956.
Wulz: born 1893, 1943 Generalmajor, discharged 1958.
And some more.
Regards
Uwe
