    Help with Pilot Badges

    Hello All,
    <O</O
I have a few pilot badges that I believe are called the 1974-1986 type. I have read that the earlier of these ( with the Mig. 21 type aircraft) have the aircraft inset in the enamel and has the nose pitot tube. The type I have are the later ones with the aircraft being a separate piece affixed to the badge and the aircraft no longer having the pitot tube. I was also under the impression that the later ones had provisions on the rear for the flight hour hangers. None of the 1974 type badges I have are fitted with anything on the rear to attach a hanger.
    <O</O
Am I correct to call these 1974 2nd type badges and when would these badges have been manufactured without the attachment for the hour hanger? Also when did the rear screw attachment change from the “impressed” type to the type that is attached with some type of adhesive?
    <O</O
Here are two of mine. One with the earlier type of screw attachment and the other with the later type.
    <O</O
The badges are the same size, the photos make them seem different sizes. They are identical with the exception of the method of attaching the screws.
    <O</O
    Thanks,
    <O</O

Rear. Again the photo makes it look like they are different sizes but they are the same.

Lee - I have a set I purchased in East Berlin prior to the fall of the wall. I believe have one example of the type with the nose pitot tube. I;ll check them this afternoon. I don't recall them having the hanger loops for the flight hour numbers.

Here are my pilot's badges, none of which have prongs to hang flight hours -

Here is a closeup of the older one piece badge with the nose pitot tube next to the never version. Note the color difference. -

Thanks Kevin. There is a big difference in color.

I holp Lee don't mind me reviving this old thread on pilot's badges. I've been looking for flight hour hangers for the older pilots badges (see posts 4 & 5 above) for years. And I found one in the most unlikely place, attached to a newer pilots badge I bought recently. In the photo below it's on the top with an example of the newer hanger on the pilot's badge below it.

The top hanger is a flat blue enamel, the same color as the enamel on the older flight badge. The bottom hanger is the painted plastic covered version.

At the bottom of the photo is a pair of Muster (sample of pattern) flight hangers that according to the 'Red Book' (Militarische Abzeichen der DDR) were never produced.

It's these little finds that make DDR collecting so fun and interesting.
