Stefas - I am not sure how many persons were presented the award and I to would be interested in knowing. But I would be interested in seeing your star and document...pretty please...
Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did. Quote - Sophie Scholl - White Rose resistance group

Reference the question - Was there a maximum every year? I can't speak to domestic award of this decoration but the Grosser Stern was generally awarded during state visits of significant foreign politicians. For example I have a copy of the 12 May 1988 National-Zeitung which has a front page article with a photo showing Erich Honecker awarding the Gosser Stern to Rodney Arismendi (1913–1989) who led the Communist Party of Uruguay (PCU). Unfortunately it's Erich handing a box with a medal, as was the practice, no photos of Arismendi actually wearing the medal. It also appears that the Scharnhorst-Order was the medal of choice for senior foreign general officers such as defense ministers.

Stefas - A very nice small grouping you have in your collection. Your friendship document has not changed much since the early 1980s and yours was awarded in late 1989...nice...

Does your star medal have any markings on the back?

Thank you for taking the time to post your small grouping...

Hello all - to follow up with Stefas's question and Kevin's post (7). I have no specific information to back this up, but after going over the current list of names. My initial thought right now is that three to five persons were awarded the friendship star per year. Additional comments appreciated...

I support Ralph's assumption. Only a few of the Gold and Silver were awarded each year. From what I've seen so far these were given to as select few well regarded GDR citizens as a kind of lifetime achievement award in their field of work. The Grand Star appears to be reserved for foreign "diplomats" i.e. senior members of the communist party in their respective countries. I just found a 12 April 1988 Neues Deutschland article about the death of Ezekias Papaioannou a Cypriot communist politician who had died two days earlier. It is accompanied by a photo of Papaioannou receiving his Grand Star in 1983. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezekias_Papaioannou
