No Problem. It's not like no one else is guilty of that.

The DDR definitely had an embassy in the United States. As I said earlier there is a poster of natural scenery from the 1980s hanging in my German class. I did not copy down the address on it until today.

        The poster is stamped:

Embassy of the German Democratic Republic
        1717 Massachusetts Avenue NW
        Washington, D.C. 20036
Do not know if that helps anyone...

Additional to this Therad, Im posting a few Images from my Reference Material (Alltag in der DDR) of the "Permanent Agency of the DDR" in New York. Written by the Ex-Cook of the DDR Embassy in New York.

The DDR Regime bought this Building sometimes in 1974.
It is placed at the 58th Park Avenue in New York. One of the "most expensive" Streets in NYC. The Pre Owner of this Building was a private Person.

It included a 40Seat Cinema, Barber Shop with golden Water Taps, a Wine Cellar and a Sauna.

The Price the DDR payed for this fancy Building is of Course unknown but it was for sure Verrrry Expensive and the DDR had to grab deep in their "State Wallet". After some Time, it was realised it is missing one big Room for large Meetings. So the DDR did build another large Meeting Hall.
Short after that, the NY Press brought out Newspapers with the Headline: "Communist build Wall in New York"
Of interest is that the BRD Embassy in NY was much smaler and simpler looking. A Sign from the DDR of "showing off" to the West
The DDR Embassy also had their own Cook in House. That was a privelege that only the Russian and Czech Embassy had at this time.
Non of the Staff was living in the Embassy Building. They had the whole 32th Floor with 8 Rooms, in a Skysrcaper next to the Embassy Building.
Also some Rooms on the 26th Floor were rent or bought by the DDR.

Besides these 2 Buildings, the DDR had a small but luxurious Residence just outside of New York for special Meetings. A Mid Size House with Swimming Pool, big Rooms and a modern Kitchen.

I hope this was of interest for all.
          Regards
          Andreas

              Gents,

I would not doubt that the DDR had a Consulat in NYC but its function would not have been as their office for the U.N. Offices of members of the U.N. in NYC were normally refered to as Permanent Missions to the U.N.
On another note re DDR Embassies, when the DDR ceased to exist they left a number of Embassy buildings empty in foreign countries. In the main, West Germany had Embassies established in the countries it had diplomatic relations with and had no use for the majority of the old DDR Embassy building where they duplicated West German Embassies. I say "in the main" because I do not have knowledge of all of the countries where each nation had an Embassy before 2 Oct. 1990.
I can speak for the East German Embassy building in Kiev as the Canadian Government bought it and used it as their Embassy. I visited there several times on work related activities. The Canadian Government also bought an ex East German Embassy in an African nation but I can not remember which one now. Too long ago!

              Regards,

              Gordon

It would be interesting to know who occupies those "ehem. DDR" properties in NYC.

Klaus - Yes there was an embassy in Washington DC during the Cold War. Both the United States and East Germany agreed to establish on embassy in 1974.
