John F - I beg to differ, there was a US Embassy in East Berlin. See Wikipedia:

The new Berlin U.S. Embassy aside, its "Gawd Awful" - what's become of the former enclave around Brandenburg Gate. What once was open park along either side and to the rear, is now a solid mass of concrete jungle dwarfing this historic land mark. Its as though its being swallowed up by some giant sea monster.

              Gents,

now it will become more and more intresting.
Dave M. showed us pics from the G.D.R. consulate in NYC. But there must be an embassy in Washington. I searched on and on but I did not found any pics or the adress.

Maybe today the "Goethe-Institute"-dependance of U.S.A. is in??
So it was usual with the former G.D.R.-embayssies in other countries.
              Who knows more?

I stand corrected. I should have said until 1989, the U.S. did not have an embassy in the DDR.

                    Dirk,

The East Germans would have had a consulate in NYC because of their admittance into the U.N. in 1973.

The US did have an embassy in the DDR from 1974 to unification. See East German a Country Study, Federal Research Division, Library of Congress July 1987 - Page 218 "The absence of formal diplomatic relations between the United States and East Germany had represented a reluctance to accord political legitimacy to East Germany. When the two governments signed diplomatic protocols in Washington on September 4, 1974, the SED could rightly claim that an unpleasant era had come to an end."

Er John, again Kevin and I will have to differ with you, mate. Prior to 89, the US had a US Consulate in West Berlin, and an Embassy in East Berlin. I actually along with five fellow members of Company F, 40th Armor's USAEUR Champion Combat Cross Country Team, at the inventation of the Company Commander, went there one Friday evening as his guests, where we were hosted by the Embassy's U.S. Marine Corps and treated to an unforgettable "TGIF" evening. This occurred in 1980.

The tricky part was finding our way back to Checkpoint Charlie, given that we all were not quite in the same condition when we left, as we were when we initially arrived ..... if you get my meaning.

I stand corrected again. I went back and re-read my source and it does state that "after East Germany's acceptence in the UN the US did open relations in 1974 with a "mission" in Berlin...my bad, I guess I missunderstood what "mission" meant. (head space and timing) . I will retrack my original statement.

John, I think you still miss the point that in 1974 the United states had an Ambassodor and a Embassy to the DDR. And That the DDR had a embassy in the United states as well as consulates.
