info and pics of DDR embassy's

Does anybody know about where they were at like here in the US? What about the FGR? Did they have one also? How about pictures?

There is a poster hanging in my German class' room of some scenery in the Erzgebirge that is stamped "Embassy of the German Democratic Republic" and gives an address (I do not remember it), so the DDR had an embassy in the US.

This is a nice document of the official negotions and the agreement between the US to open embassies. It is from 1974. The DDR embassy was established in Washington DC ... the exact address I have not found as yet:

        Michael,

there were no embassies of the G.D.R. and the F.R.G. in the other land in each case. There were 'constant representations'. However, they were treated as equal of an embassy. Their seats were in the former capitals Berlin and Bonn.

Jon - Thanks for the additional info data related to the other residence in the GDR.

It would be interesting to know of the ones listed in the phone book how many are still open for business today at the same address...

Ralph, I believe that most of the East european countries that were in East-Berlin still have the same building in Berlin. For sure the Russian Federation and the Czech Republic have the same address as 20 years ago.

A bit off topic but as I recall the Russian Embassy was a massive compound just down the street from the Brandenburg Gate. Everything about it reminded me of a fortress. Because of its prime location I imagine they are still there.

The US had an embassy in East Berlin and a consolate in West Berlin that was in the same building as my office. Every member of the U.S. Berlin Brigade travelling in East Berlin had to have information on the location of the US Embassy in case on emergency. I believe after unification the US buildt a new embassy at Pariser Strasse, which was the location of the embassy building that was destroyed during the WWII. Kevin

Just to confirm what you said. The Russian embassy is today at the same place as the Soviet embassy was.

The US embassy is on Neustädtische Kirchstrasse, 3 blocs from the Brandenburg Gate. There are permanent fences on the street since 9/11 and the street is closed for pedestrians.

The US started to build their new embassy on Pariser Platz only 2 years ago. It should be ready for spring 2008. I just hope they won't close down the Brandenburger Gate next time there will be a manifestation against the US.

Hey Kevin - I think your comments are on topic and of interest about the embassies in Berlin.

This is a bit off topic...The new US embassy on Pariser platz as of last year was still being constructed, but at the same time its location was/is a huge problem with tourism in the area...
