    Bayonets

    Genossen,
What bayonets were used during what years? I am looking to get one to complete my Grenztruppen and Mot. Schutzen field kits.
    Danke!

I think it would also depend on what model AK you were issued.

            AK Bayonet Collectors Book

If anyone on the forum has an interest in the various bayonets for the Kalashnikov, I would recommend this book. Instead of covering the various styles of blades used in the DDR, it covers all types from all countries per chapter, so you will see DDR bayonets throughout the book.

The downside to this book is the cost. It is around $50.00 for a copy.

What was the year of publication, and how many pages are there?

                Hello Jon,

This book was published in 2002. Actually, I picked up my copy off of Ebay, but I also have seen copies for sale on Ak-47 related websites such as AK.net, etc. On some sites, the book is $60.00, but with shipping included, I've paid about $57.00 for mine.

This is a display I put together a couple years ago to share on a message board for Kalashnikov enthusiasts.

Everything I know about AK bayonets, I learned from Martin Ivie's book, Kalashnikov Bayonets. I like the general bayonet type classifications that Mr. Ivie uses, so I'll list those along with the DDR nomenclature for the bayonets next to it.

The DDR's bayonets mirror the evolution of Soviet bayonets, except that they never produced the late AK-74 "spearpoint" type.

                  AK-47 - DDR Modell 47
For East German milled receiver AK's, built under license from 1959 to 1965.

                  AKM (Type I) - DDR Modell 59
"Bakelite" grip, steel sheath with rubber insulator. Used for the stamped-receiver East German AK's from 1965 until 1979.

AKM (Type I "transitional") - DDR Modell 79
The steel sheath was replaced with a polyamide plastic sheath that was used for all subsequent bayonets. Used from 1979 until "the end".

AKM (Type II) / Early AK-74 - DDR Modell AK74 (early version)
The bulbous plastic pommels of the earlier AKM bayonets had a tendency to crack under field conditions, so an improved design was introduced with a steel pommel capping the "Bakelite" grip.

Designed for the East German version of the AK-74, first produced in 1985.

Late AKM / Early AK-74 - DDR Modell AK74 (late version)
Black plastic polyamide grip , not "Bakelite". Based on serial number data, these black bayonets supplanted the yellow-red ones for use on DDR AK-74's, but it's unclear exactly which year that occurred.

                  Thanks for looking. -Rich

                        Rich,

I also appreciate your concise description of DDR bayonets. Good job! As bayonets are one of my areas of interest, I would add that there are minor variations of these specific types as well. For instance, one will find slilghtly different web hangers and different scabbard construction on the early AK47 bayonets. All grist for us bayonet collectors who then have to obtain one of each.

Don't forget the KM87 tool bayonet in your list or the spring loaded practice bayonets. One thing I have always looked for but never found was a proven DDR reworked S84/98 bayonet for the Kar.98 that was reworked and re-issued by the Volkspolizei. The rifles are found with MdI markings and photographs of them in use with bayonets exist but where are the bayonets??? One more thing to keep looking for it seems.

Thanks for posting my photos Ralph.

These KM87 (Kampfmesser 87) bayonets are scarce. The pommel unscrews and inside one will find a survival kit. There is fishing line, hooks, water purification pills, sewing stuff, etc. in the hollow grip. The blade has an inclinemeter and measuring markings etched on it as well as a sawback and serial number. The scabbard has the usual wire cutter tip but there is also a signal mirror hidden in the web frog.

These bayonets were seldom issued and only a few thousand were made. They are not seen in the US very often and they are expensive when found.
