    Tank Gunnery Training

I was cleaning out my desk and came on this...
Dag, was this the same for you?

    Hi Jon,

In general, out training was the same. I have seen quite a few articles about the topic, and have to say that this is one of the better ones. However, I know that in the late 80ies and early nineties the use of simulators in the West German army and in the British Army was not as wide-spread as this article suggest. Simply because they were so expensive in those days.

In general, it must be said that our gunnery training was actually better than that of the Soviet army. certainly the results. The usual "friendly" competitions of the 70ies were not appreciated anymore by the Soviet army because the NVA get better and better (not just tankers).

The description of the procedures are quite accurate but the overall system with regards to the allocation/use of firing ranges was slightly different in the NVA.

If you want more information about the simulators we used and how we used them, let me know.

    Dag

Hi Jon, any interest in Artillery Gunnery Simulation in the NVA or would you want to keep this thread 'clean' for tanks only? Cheers, Torsten.

Yes Dag, do tell us...do tell us.

PS. I am not expecting your answer to be similar to the article I posted in regards to the level of detail and such. Just the big points are ok. Unless other members want other information?

              Jon,

My idea is to give a rather detailed answer. The reason for this is simple:

I used these various simulators so often during my time, I have (still) a rather good knowledge. That comes from being trained myself but also from training gunners myself and from the fact that I used to command one of the "training/combat tanks" mentioned in the article. I also have, somewhere, one or two articles and some training aids.

However, this will take a few days but I'll try to do it this year.

              Dag

                Thanks Dag.
I was hoping that you would provide a detailed description but I did not want to burden you . I am quite sure that this will be of interest to others on the forum as well.

                Jon.
