Communist Street Names: East Germany Alive and Well
---------------------------------------------------------------------

It is almost 17 years since the fall of communist East Germany, but
still the regime is commemorated in thousands of street names all
over the region. Those who fought the dictatorship, on the other
hand, are barely remembered.

So after reading this, do you guys have communist street signs from East-Germany? I know that Dallasfan (Johan) and Olivyaya (Olivier) have some to show us maybe from their collection.

I don't remember if Th******228;lmannpionier (Andreas) has some for his next museum?

Lool !
This reminds me of a street in Mulhouse named rue "du Sauvage" before WWII and changed into "A. Hitler street" !! 'Sauvage' in French means here something like someone "unsociable" (for an animal it would mean wild).

Great Signs Johan

the Stalinstrasse is the best and in my opinion the rarest, because most if not all Stalin Street Signs were replaced in the 60's.
we had a stalinstrasse here as well and they later replaced it with Leninstrasse.

here are some more...not mine but from my mate.

regards

Hello Andreas

I like the streetsigns on your photos !
My Stalinstrasse streetsign is not a real beauty , but original.
the two other streetsigns are original from Dresden , I have them from a very reliable contact .
I've been told that the Stalinallee is still there in Berlin .
A cousin of mine is named : Jozefina Stalina , my uncle was a real and active communist in Holland and when he died they placed a big russian flag over his coffin.

Regards , Johan

Gentlemen,
the reason for the fact that many streets are not renamed in Eastern Germany yet are not due to the fact that there the communists still have the say. The reason are simply the huge costs which are connected with renamings such magnitude. I know that from my earlier hometowns (Halle/S., Wolfen). One struggles there vehemently against such renamings.
But there also is here in West German towns street name of communists; e.g., in Wuppertal there is the Friedrich Engels street (logically, the family Engels comes from there), in Trier I was already in the Karl Marx-Strasse (Marx is born there), in Cologne we have the August-Bebel-Platz. And I hold every bet (but I do not know it exactly) that there is a Ernst-Th******228;lmann-street in Hamburg (he comes from there).
