    Dennis,

I have never seen anything quite like this hat before but I do not belive it is post war. It is definitely not Forestry with that silver piping. All caps had the stiffener in the front but you normally don't see that because the lining covers it up. My best guess would be a Third Reich hat that was privately purchased for and enlisted man, which they could do, for wear with their walking out dress.
As you are no doubt aware, it isn't unusual to find caps with the eagle missing. I have a Third Reich Forestry cap with the eagle missing but there are clear indications on the cloth of where the eagle the embroidered was removed. Any sign of that on your cap?

    Regards,

    Gordon

Ther is no sign of an eagle . Is it possible that the hat was unissued and just didn't get one applied?

        Dennis,

Good question that I can not answer for sure but I doubt it. It would appear that eagles, either sewn on or pin on types, were put on the caps during manufacture before the lining was installed. I suppose that someone could have very carfully removed a sewn on eagle and left no trace. You have a very interesting cap that will probably remain a mistery for some time unless someone comes up with a very similar cap by the same manufacturer. Sorry that I can not be of more help.

        Regards,

        Gordon
