    DDR Militärenglisch für Fallschirmjäger

    Here I have a very nice 1969 NVA Handbook on Military english for Paratroopers. An ex. brit soldier said that they'd shot everybody coming with this english into the frontline because they must be spies.
    You get a headace from it.
    Sorry the original is not for sale but I have some nice copies made like the original.

          Is it reallty that bad? No wonder they got shot if being captured with that!

          It would be funny if you posted an example from it, ie a line with very bad english in it to give us a taste. I would have thought the NVA at the time would have had someone to moderate it to make sure it checked out.

            Nico - Is correct about the english being used in the book...not good at all. There are areas in the book that give you a slight chuckle when you read it. And what has been interesting to me about the book has been with all the contacts the DDR had with the Soviet Union and the West...they could have done better...

            The same holds true that there are persons that should not try to write english into german, because the persons who can read and write german will have a chuckle just the same. But the DDR authorities could have done better especially when they put their soldiers in harms way. You would have thought to ensure they spoke the language in the situations they were going to be in...behind enemy lines.

              I think I was the ex-brit soldier that said that, huh Nico?

              Really, I could just imagine standing guard somewere and some strange guy turns up with a heavy german accent and says "were are the commanding officer" or something similar.

              I would be cocking my gun pretty quick believe me.

                      I'm not an expert on anything related to the NVA-Fallschirmjaeger but I'm certain that you would not be in a position to cock your weapon when this bad English is used. You would most likely in a position were the only thing you could do, is saying: I cannot answer this question!

                      In general, keep in mind that this book is a basic guide, not intended as a language course, aimed most likely at conscripts/short term NCOs. I'm not sure, but in the late 60ies English may not have been on the normal school curriculum.

                      And, with all respect, I wonder how paras of the British Army would have coped with German in th late 60ies.....
