        My favorite DDR reference book

        Thread necromancy...

I have this great DDR reference book. It's over 500 pages of photos, many of them in color, on every possible facet of the early DDR: uniforms, posters, cars, military, orders, medals, politics, money, consumer design, FDJ, everything. I find it to be the best of my reference books. Sorry for the superabundance of photos; I could post 500 and they'd still be interesting!

          Trevor,

Thank you for posting to this thread. The book appears to encompass just about every facet of the DDR that one might find of interest.

Can you provide a source or sources for acquisition of it?

          Thanks.

            Hi Michael,
This book is indeed pretty amazing. I got it at the Deutsche Historisches Museum shop about 10 years ago. I think they no longer have it, but it seems you can find it used at Abebooks.
            I really recommend it!

Here is the DHM website in English for the original exhibit that the book is based on: http://www.dhm.de/ENGLISH/ausstellungen/aufneu/

Hi Trevor, that looks like a beautiful book that I had not seen before ... thanks for showing it... I had a look through the DHM DDR exhibition a few months ago, but I did not notice this book in their souvenir shop??? I guess, I should have looked a bit more closely and certainly will do when I go to Berlin again in the summer. Cheers, Torsten.

Hi Torsten. I'm very happy you like the photos. It seems you have a very nice collection yourself. I've got a number of the other books listed in this section, and a few not listed that I will photograph over the coming week. You may still order the book from here, as they have more than one seller offering them.

Great news Michael! I don't expect you'll be disappointed.

A little too expensive there for my taste ... I'll see if I can find it elsewhere for more reasonable money ... Cheers, Torsten.

                            Hi Trevor

I also ordered the book after you showed it in this thread , its fantastic !
I like it a lot , there's so much to see , flags , posters etc.
There's also a very nice radio in the book , its a birthday gift to Wilhelm Pieck when he turned 80 , I wonder what happened to it .
I know that the Deutches Historisches Museum (DHM) in Berlin has lots of gifts
from former DDR leaders , some of them are in the book ''DDR Souvenirs''
Here is the photo of the Wilhelm Pieck radio ( page 211 )
