Actually the asbestos was removed some time ago. I read a recent on-line article that they are not doing heavy demolition and taking their time pulling the buiding apart piece by piece because of the fear of damaging foundations of nearby historic buildings. Kevin

I have finally been there today and the only thing I have to say is :

Well we all know what they are doing right now, but it just make me sick to see this for real. Even if I haven't been to the GDR when I was younger, I just feel like Berlin is erasing the history of the past century piece by piece. Just last week when I arrived in Berlin, it was written in the newspapers that the city wanted to dismantle 45 wall segments in order to make a free view for the new arena they are building at the Ostbahnhof.

I just don't understand that! Well, here is the result of my excusion day. I didn't feel I was ready to go to the universsity today, so I made the tourist again.

Well, at least they are "dismantling" it and not "demolishing it". But hey - Berlin gets a brand new shiny Kaiser Schloss in the bargain! Talk about back to the future!

Yeah, the exchange one palace against an other one.

                This is just crazy!

By the way this is not one of my picture.

Well it appears the construction workers will be employed for a while they are dismantling...

Nah, not really. It just seems there is nothing interesting to grab out there. I would like to know where the DDR wreath is now. The one who was hanging on the facade few years ago.

Here's an update from my trip to Berlin last week - March 11-16, 2007, exactly a year to the week I was last there - seems the demo crews have slowly but steadily been making progress...
