Whilst we are on the subject of the Offizier Achselschnur, I thought I should add one observation that might have escaped many: these shoulder chords come in two variants, an earlier aluminium one and a later polyester one but (at least the aluminium ones) they are also SIZED.
I managed to buy two of these still in their boxes and on the bottom of the boxes there was stamped in ink: Große 1 on the smaller one and Große 3 on the longer one. Unfortunately there does not seem to be any way of telling the size once they have been removed from the boxes (other than in relative terms).
So if you happen to be bidding on a boxed one on Ebay, ask for the size, which should be written on the bottom of the box.
The point being that, if you are ever going to wear it, the Achselschnur should not hang below the belt. Here is my friend Benedict on the left and me on the right. I am wearing the smaller Achselschnur and it sits all right, but Benedict's is unfortunately far too long for him (I have been trying to find another aluminium one for him, but I have only come across polyester ones of late)
