    John,

This try is the good one!!! Congrats!!! You are the winner!!!

The visit of French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing took place on 29 October 1979, in West Berlin to confirm the Allies commitment to a free city. Helmut schmidt was the Bundeskanzler.

The sentence is not in fact the one I wanted (but it was a bonus only, so you have won ).
The one I had in mind is a more Berlin related one than the one you proposed : "La liberté de Berlin, c'est aussi la nôtre" ("Berlin's freedom is also our freedom").
This sentence is now engraved on a bronze plaque in the Staatsbibliothek, in Berlin.

After this visit in 1979, the next French President to visit Berlin will be François Mitterrand, in October 1985... as proposed by Bryan (Soviet).

Bravo to all players, and again congrats to John!!!

    John, your turn now!!

    Cheers.

    Ch.

      Name that Street

During the Cold War period, this former East German street has had three different names. What is it’s current name and what & when were the previous other two?

This one is easy for a Berlin lover like me. Hope I have it right.

        Frankfurter Allee
        Stalin-Allee
        Karl-Marx-Allee

The current name is Frankfurter Allee.

I think we had a previous question on that Boulevard in this thread.

I let people finding the dates when it changed, because I do not know them.

Yes, Bryan, as a Berlin lover, I discover this one too late...

If you don't mind, I would just like to make a light correction for the exact section shown in the picture; here are the names and dates :

Frankfurter Allee : from 18th century to 21 December 1949 (70th birthday of Stalin)

          Stalin-Allee : from 21 December 1949 to 13 November 1961.

          Karl-Marx-Allee : From 13 November 1961 to today.

The name Karl-Marx-Allee is still remaining today for the section between Alexanderplatz and the Frankfurter Tor (what is shown on the pic). For the section after Frankfurter Tor, the name is Frankfurter Allee.

          Cheers.

          Ch.

Bravo Christophe! You are next to post a question. Maybe an other Berlin question would be interesting!

Here is a picture from my collection I have already shown from this famous Allee. I think it was made in the 60's.

Bryan and Christophe, (I'm going to hijack this thread)

Since you guy like Berlin so much lets see if you guess this one. What is the name of this former East German building and what street is it located on in Berlin?

                    John,

                    Many thanks.
But, as Bryan was very close, and as I have very recently already posted a question; I propose it is now Bryan's turn... if he accepts!!!

                    Are you OK Bryan ?

                    Cheers.

                      John,

This is one of the two towers of the Frankfurter Tor (Turmbauten am Frankfurter Tor). it is located at the end of the Karl-Marx Allee, at Frankfurter Tor square.

What is quite astonishing is that the name Karl-Marx Allee has remained... .

                        Cheers.

So I guess Ostdeutschland and Christophe were right about the second question from John. Because Christophe wants me to take his turn here we go again on East-Berlin. As said earlier I'm a Berliner fan and I have to add that I have a lot interest in Berlin architecture. So let's go with a small "what is this question".

If it's not found I'll give some hints about the building. In which building are we right now. Sorry for the poor scan.

Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did. Quote - Sophie Scholl - White Rose resistance group

                                Nice pic.
I was on the way to disqualify myself; thinking I had recognized the windows... but the position of the TV Tower makes me now doubt...

So, I will let the others play; and if it is not found, I'll try to guess... and check if my first idea is correct.
