that pretty much sums it up...but is not quite correct...Jungpionier at school from year 1 to year 3, Thaelmannpionier from year 4 to 7 and then FDJ from year 8 onwards (actual age for the FDJ was 14 years old to 25 years old). Cheers, Torsten.

PS: Andreas, btw, I was FDJ GOL Sekretaer at the POS and at my EOS (maybe you still remember what that was?) and I had to lead the FDJ Appell at school, and quite often we had combined Pionier and FDJ Appell and then I also had to shout the Seid Bereit! and for the FDJler it was Freundschaft!...but, I did have a microphone, so no problem there...

Jungpioniere (Young Pioneers) was supposed to create a new generation of young Germans with the correct attitudes to the country, and to encourage group activity rather than individualism. It was the junior branch of the FDJ .The Membership of the Jungpioniere was not compulsory, but it was not easy to opt out, but I believe nobody really thought about, not to let your kid join the Jungpioniere , and around 98% of children belonged to it. From the age of 6 - 10(1st grade-4th grade in school) you were Jungpionier(blue bandana) and from the age of 10 - 16 (4th-6th) you became Thaelmannpionier(red bandana).

Name of Organisation: Pionierorganisation "Ernst-Thealmann" and was splitted in Youth Pioneers and Thaelmann Pioneers.
I remember each Monday in school you had to attend the "Fahnenapell" and you had to do the "Pioniergruss" when the Pionier leaders pulled up the JP Flag followed by 30min. singing some songs or someone read a poem or played guitar or was awarded a JP Badge.
Of Course you also had to do the "Pioniergruss"(I hope everybody has already seen what it looks like) when the Teacher came into the class room.

With the 4th grade in school you became a Thaelmannpionier and the red bandana ..in my case we were driven to Potsdam in the Cecilienhof and spend the whole day there.First we did get breakfast and afterwards they awarded us with the red bandanas and we played games and so on.

The weekly Pioneer Afternoons included educational and vocational opportunities, sports activities, and entertainment. The DDR subsidized young people’s theater, concerts, and movie tickets, and provided a large number of clubrooms, sport facilities, and youth travel opportunities.
Allaround it was a very good Organisation where your Kid was under supervision all the Time, had Fun and learned something for live..but of course in a bit of a different way and view..the socialism way & view but then on the other hand, you really can see how actually similar it was to the TR time..thinking of HJ and BDM organisations..only as I said, the socialism way.

    cheers
    Andreas

thanks about the correct age..I've just changed it in my post

do you still remeber the whole Spell of the FDJ??..I can remember that we also combined Pioneers and FDJ at the Fahnenapell and we Jungpioniere tried always not to laugh about the "older FDJler" in the row because the response of the Freundschaft! was pretty often repeated very lame and quiet(understandable at 7.00 o´clock in the morning when you probably had to write a test in math this day)

I can't even remember, when we had to start school, but I think it was 08.20 am?? or 07.20 am??...no idea...I have to ask my mum tomorrow... she always remembers things like that...Cheers, Torsten.

We started school at 7.50 a.m. with the first lesson-hour. But sometimes was the "nullte" (zero) hour. Most sports or just "Fahnenappell"-it starts at 7.00 .

Hello all, we will continue to move on until Iannima comes back with his question. So with that I will post the next question...

For the next question I am using a picture for this round which I hope works out...

            Question number...
            1. What is important in this picture besides the frau in the background?
            2. And why?
            3. Where is this location? (I will assist if no one can locate where this picture was taken. I will not leave any member hanging if no answers.)
            4. What important complex is near this picture? (This picture is within one block of the complex. If need be I will also assist this question with hints.) PS...there is a hint already in the picture. You will need to review past threads.

Again, I hope this round works out for all of us...

It's in Berlin-Lichtenberg and the Stasi Headquarters in Normannenstrasse are nearby...today it is the Stasi Museum of course and I think that would be a perfect place for all of us to meet should we have a little get together in Berlin in the future??... not sure if this answers all your questions? Cheers, Torsten.

I presume, the road she is about to cross is the Frankfurter Allee??...some marching blocks had to do extra night parade training on it to prepare for the big parades...I did not have to do it, but some of the non-Artillery marching blocks needed it. well it makes sense to me.. ,..but anyhow, I presume that is not the answer that you are looking for? It's certainly not the Karl-Marx-Allee that the woman is about to cross...is it?? Cheers, Torsten.

Here is the map were Ralph is :

What shall we say more. Torsten already said that it is the "Forschungs- und Gedenkstätte Normannenstraße"

Torsten is also right. This is the Frankfurter Allee also known as the Karl-Marx-Allee or Stalineallee. Torsten I thought this was in Friedrichshain.

This street was built in 1952 with all the big appartment and this street had to be the pride of East-Berlin. The worker from the Stalinealle played an important role during June 1953 uprising.

This street change is name for the Karl-Marx-Allee after the destalinisation and was one of the big "military boulevard" use for parade in the DDR until 1989.

This picture was taken after 1989.

You can see Plattenbau with Western cars.

Hi Soviet, go back to that map and follow the Frankfurter Allee to the left and eventually it will change into the Karl Marx Allee, but where Ralph is standing that is not the Karl Marx Allee...the part where the parades were done is actually in Berlin Mitte much further to the left on that map...near where you will see some big buildings on the map...Cheers, Torsten.
