Medal Ribbons

Hi all,

Just wondering. I have three (out of about 25) Soviet medals in which the 5 sided ribbon seems to be switched. Normally you see the right side overlapping the left side. However, take a look at these three. Is this a common occurance?

Two of these have recently replaced ribbons. Probably whoever replaced the ribbons didn't know that the ribbons overlapped the other way. That's all...

ahhh ... ok. However, in McDaniel and Schmitt Comprehensive guide, there is a picture of a 20 year Irreproachable Service Medal with the same reverse setup (p.355). I suppose it could be a replaced (and mis-applied) one too?

Strange that the Medal for Combat Service looks to be the original ribbon, but it too reversed?

I think you are trying to read too much into this. A simple period mistake, happened in any country (similar to wrong precedence of awards on period medal bars or reverse mounting of some medals)

I agree with these gentlemen, the ribbons were probably just replaced only recently and the person had no clue how to put them one.

IMHO, at least the right ribbons were used, so mainly the people that will see the difference will be the people like us.

Thanks everyone for opinions. It appears that the picture Rick linked ... that fellow has a Order of the Red Banner with ribbon reversed too ... oh well ... mistakes I suppose. I feel alot better now.

Im wondering if maybe they made the ribbons that way to accomodate wearing a row on the right breast rather than the left? You see rows of medals on both sides of some of the higher decorated Marshals etc. Im not sure if in that case, the higher order of preference was to run from right to left? If that was the case, this reversed ribbon construction would allow the higher medals to overlap the "lesser" ones in the correct manner.

Didnt some of the WW1 German groupings go in reversed orders?
