Hi all...!
I know there is a thread dedicated to media in the community section, but as Soviet / Russian films are not to the tastes of most who go there, I thought we needed a thread specifically for them here...
Its been bank holiday time here in the UK, so I have been taking the opportunity to watch a few. Thanks to the member who recommended the series "The Attackers" - although I have only watched the first two episodes so far..!
So here are some recent viewing recommendations:
The "Liberation" series - Berlin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y1qjl3X0M4
Cracking Soviet era war film about the Berlin campaign, plenty of tanks too
Tarkovsky's "Ivan's Childhood" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0nx70hAqjM&t=2847s
Definitely an "Art" movie, but some haunting images in a depiction of War and childhood.
"Demoted" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asw094sx4IA
Definitely low budget, but used to great effect. If you like the strange dream like quality of films like "White Tiger" you will enjoy this one... No tanks though!
"The Edge" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7FmBYKbvOM&t=11s
No, not a film about that tw@t from U2, but a story about an injured and traumatised tank commander sent to a Siberian town to work as an engineer on a train after the war ends. A real story of human will and spirit, not so much a war film, more akin to "The Deerhunter".... With trains! Recommended
"Road to Berlin" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjHTWMP_T1U&t=2762s
Although it doesn't seem to be particularly set during the Berlin campaign, this was a hidden gem. A story of duty and friendship. Brilliantly acted and great storytelling, with some well done action pieces too. I highly recommend this one
I've only skimmed the surface so far, as there seems to be so many on YouTube, if anyone has any other recommendations, please add them here...!
