      It's a Hungarian M50

The helmet is certainly a Hungarian M50, distinct from the Russian helmets by the D-rings for the chinstrap (never on Russian M40) and the Hungarian cloth pads. The white markings are a size marker, in this case size 2 (of 5).

What I would like to know is if any Russian M40 shells were ever re-made by the Hungarians to M50 state, before Hungarian production started properly. There is a hint regarding this on the World War helmets website - translation follows -

"However, it is likely that the shells of Russian helmets Ssh 40 have been used to be reconditioned helmet model 50 before the start of production of the latter."

This is the only time I have seen this mentioned. A Russian shell should (always?) be recognisable by the small star stamped into the steel under the front brim. Can anyone tell me anything about this, please!
