    "Guess this Medal"

Welcome to the first annual Communist Bloc Forum "Guess this Medal" thread (background: APPLAUSE - CLAPPING).

I'm your host Ralph Pickard (aka...Tony, stump the chump and any other names you can think of when replying back to me... ).

All forum contestants are eligable to play this game and since this is OUR first game...There are just a few ground rules for all our contestants.

    - There will be no spitting, no bitting...opps wrong set of rules (background: laughter... )

    OK...lets try this again...
    1. We need to discuss one badge - pin - medal at a time until the item has been identified. So there is no confusion about items.

    2. Once an item has been identified, a next person who wants to post the next round of fun announces or steps forward. This should make sure there is no rush to post new items all at once. Remember everyone will get a crack at this.

    3. No posting items to just show you have one unless its older newer or adds to the post that is being discussed or shown.

    4. No heckling, bantering or arguing with a person when he or she gets an item wrong or disagreements.

    5. Have FUN and ENJOY this thread along with making new forum friends!!!

AND with that, lets bring out the contestants and get them ready to play "Guess this Medal". (background: APPLAUSE - CLAPPING)

We will start with post number one...

        very good idea...
this one very much looks like the "DGP für Ausgezeighnete leistungen" badge
Semms to be made of Silver as the 900 mark shows...
The dove makes me think of the international communist friendship...
That will be my contribution !

It does look similar to the Leistungsabzeichen der Deutschen Grenzpolizei oval one.

In fact this would be a 1950's badge, I'm suprised it's not numbered really. It's I think for the FR i.e Friendensrat (Peace Advisor) der DDR and a 'plakette' plaque which also came in a badge form, not the GDSF which was the friendship with Russia.

Well, I just got in and to my amazement, The Contest is already up and running, and there already are responses. Seems everyone has the jump on me.

also, no matter how I configure my "Gain" - military slang for volume, I can't seem to get the fanfare, applause and all the other hoopla to which Ralph made reference, to appear audibly. Maybe its my speakers.

Anyway, back to the badge at hand.

It was first produced in 1955 through 1960, and was still used up to and through 1973 - meaning I guess, "If you got one, wear it".

It is the Service Badge for the "Peace" of East Germany.
I don't actually know what the qualification for a receipient to be awarded one of these would be, or if it was awarded to a person or to an entity. So hopefully, now that we know what it is, someone can tell us all to what purpose it was issued?

The official East German designation for this badge is/was:
              Verdienstplakette des Friedensrates der DDR

So Marcus may have "Nailed" it.

Hello all...it only took a few hours...you guys are good.

                Mike...thanks for your opening comments.

Now about the badge...Marcus guessed it and Mike you made some interesting comments about the dates. The dates I found out about the badge was 1953 through 1959 so I thought for a few years that this badge was used for a short period of time. So thanks for the update.

Other background information about this badge. This badge came from one of my STASI groupings and there was a Urkunde that came with the badge as shown in the below post. I do not know how this badge was awarded...sorry.

                  First, Kudos to Marcus.

Second. Ralph, I think in a way you did answer my question. It was awarded with an Urkunde (I thought no less). The only question, since to whom or what it was awarded is "whited" out is, is it a person's name on the Urkunde? That is all that I really needed to know. Thanks.
And thanks for posting the Urkunde example. Nice one.

Also, I think the person that guesses the badge most correctly, should be the person required to put up the next medal, order, badge or pin. I volunteer Marcus.

By the way Ralph, you just might want to re-look that one Marcus WOLF photo you and I had an interesting debate about. Since it is still the holidays....
"Do you see what I see......? Set to music of course. Its a possibility. Yes, no? Maybe?

Hey Mike...sorry about that a poor reply back to your question...there is a individual's name on the the Urkunde. Did not mean to leave you guessing after my write up...

AND I agree you with that Marcus should be the next person to post...good call on that...

                      Hello Marcus,

The "Spotlight" is on you, dear friend.

Oh, and Ralph, before I forget. Extraordinary piece of history you have there (The badge and Urkunde). Exceptional. Not seen a real one of those before. Thanks for sharing. I probably will most likely steal my example, if and when called upon, from a book. Sorry Ole' Chap.

Hi Ralph. So this is going to be an "Annual" event. Wow. At first I thought to myself that Marcus will have to wait a really long time.
But next year is only a few days away, so maybe not.
