We all know that a lot of Imperial Russian badges, orders and medals have been reproduced over the past twenty years. What not everyone knows is that there has been a category of repros designed primarily to be sold in high end gift shops in Russian museums and even a few hotels. For a while, the Mint’s gift shop in St. Petersburg had a large case full of these reproductions for sale that represented just about every order or medal that existed in Russia circa 1900. None of these “hotel” copies would fool an experienced collector and, quite frankly, none are well enough made that a collector might view any of them as potential space fillers.
About fifteen years ago, just before one of the Max shows, a dealer appeared at big show in Baltimore with dozens and dozens of gift-shop quality Imperial Russian badges all of which had screw plates identical to yours. The dealer behind the table refused to comment as to whether the items he was offering were real, but it was obvious that even the multi-part ones were fakes…
I’m not saying that your badge is bad (I'm not comfortable with those forum members who are always really eager to pass judgement) , but I will say that since that Baltimore show, I’ve never seen an imperial Russian badge with a screw-plate like yours that was not, in the final analysis, a somewhat questionable item.

            Regards

Thank you very much for both of your opinions. I too am uncomfortable with russian badges, just like the old polish ones they make them all still to this day and it can be very hard to tell an original from a repro. I think I will give this one a pass as the customer walked in the door with some other items I feel are dodgy as well so I will just give it back to him

One other thing...I might be off, but doesn't that badge read "300 Years of the Russian Navy"? If so, that was in 1996...

Something odd to write on a badge that's supposed to be from the pre-WW1 times??

Considering the quality of the images supplied we'll never even have a chance to know if real or not. If these images were supplied from a seller to the OP I'd say "just walk away".
                  Thanks,

This is modern badge. You can see soviet navy flag on the right side of it.
