Hello,
When I was stationed in Germany in the early 90s, I picked up a lot of Soviet orders and medals in our travels to Czechoslovakia and Poland. I have nothing all that spectacular (already sold my Nevsky group), but do have quite a few red stars, 2nd class patriotic war orders, one labor glory 3rd class, two red banners of labor, two badges of honor, some guards and specialist badges, and a variety of common medals. I boxed them up over 20 years years ago when I began collecting German and haven't really been all that interested since. I also picked up a lot of common Soviet uniforms and insignia, which my wife and I got by visiting Soviet and Russian bases in eastern Germany, which are also sitting in boxes after all these years.
I am trying to decide whether to sell the orders and medals for money to use for other things. Not having dealt with the buying and selling of such items, however, I have no clue about the market for them. I know that most German items, at least the common ones, have seen a drop in prices or at least a very stagnant market in the past couple of years. I would assume the Soviet militaria market is seeing the same situation.
So my question is, would collectors of Soviet militaria advise me to sell or hold my things and hope for better days? I know this is a complex question with no simple answer, but I am just looking for a general answer based on your experience. I am not in any financial difficulty but would sell the items to use the money for other things, and the wife sure would be happy to see me free up some space!
I can post some pictures in a few days if those would help.
Thank you,
Dale
