KGB PV uniform

Comrades,

Just picked up (another) KGB PV jacket...

It has a badge I don't recognise and an unusual medal ribbon bar (plastic covered) which I have never seen before.

Can anyone identify the badge (I think its a graduation badge?) and comment on the ribbon bar?

Not convinced that the ribbon bar is right for the uniform. The fact is covered in plastic suggests that the bar was created by a veteran. The actual ribbons represented would also be worn by a veteran and not by a serving officer. What is the uniform like. To me it looks like a M1969 uniform.

Yes, it is a M69 officers service dress uniform.

I don't recognise the medals represented there, but isnt the black/yellow one (top centre) the order of glory 3rd class? And the blue/silver one top left reminds me of one of the wartime "capture" medals - could be wrong, I'm not too good on medal ribbons!

The rank badges are for a Major... I suppose not inconcievable the chap saw WW2 service?

The ribbon bar was officially made in Soviet/post-Soviet military stores (similar to US PX post exchanges). The upper left-most ribbon is the Bravery Medal and the medal to the right of it is for Victory over Germany. The ribbon for this is the same as an Order of Glory, but based on its positioning it would be the Victory over Germany medal. The remaining ribbons are post-war jubilee medals.

Ok, so is this something that a serviceman would wear during his service or is it as our friend suggests a veterans thing?

Do you know what the other jubilee ribbons are for? Knowing that would indicate this mans length of service - given that he got the Victory medal...

Actually, think I have answered it myself:

20th and 30th anniversary of Victory
50th and 60th anniversary of Soviet Armed Forces - which takes him up to 1977 - but not as far as 1987? It is 1917 or is it 1918 for the formation of the Soviet Army?

Just the middle row, middle ribbon I can't place.

So if you said he was 18 in 1945, that would have made him 50 in 1977 but not as far as 60 in 1987. Believable for a Major in the border guard?

Hello mate,
I don't think that the medal ribbon bar is the right one for this uniform. The awards do not include the 10, 15, and 20 years service medals which he would have got for continuous service. These uniforms are widely available at the moment and many sellers are simply selling them with medal ribbons obtained from elsewhere with little regard for the authenticity.
Both items could well be original but I would wager that they originally started life apart from each other..

You could well be correct actually... mind you the dealer I picked this up from tends not to do that kind of thing - if he had the ribbon bar he'd be selling it to me seperately - he knew I was only interested in the jacket itself! And I only paid him what I consider to be the rate for an officers jacket with rank insignia...

This whole thread was more me wondering quite what he'd sent me than "oooh look what I've got" ;-)

Still interested in what that badge is tho - would anyone agree its got to be a graduation badge of some sort?

The blue badge is a graduation badge for an entry-level commissioning source. This may have been suitable for a major, but he probably would have graduated to a white badge of the same shape.
