M-36 Russian Helmet

Just found this helmet this past weekend from a local picker.

Has a black painted band around the crown of the helmet. Not sure the purpose.

Salty helmet, that has seen better days. Leather is very dry.

This Ssh-36 posted for review contains the initial version of the liner to be installed in this helmet. It is a very fragile design that did not hold up well under use and was thus discontinued very promptly. As such, surviving examples have gotten rather hard to find.

i've also heard of the Spanish origins of this liner, but Clawson's book has just such liners and chinstraps claiming to be Soviet made. who to believe?

So what is their theory? I'm open to learn new things. In fact, I would not mind too much if you were correct because I can take this expensive helmet of my shopping list

Until you made the above statement, the working theory was that these liners were Soviet and of the initial factory design. This is as it is written in Clawson's book, but the theory is not his. These helmets have been sold as such for quite some time before there was ever a Clawson book. That in itself does not make it fact however.

Interested to hear what else you might share on this topic.
