Help with some russian ww2 medals.....

    Hi.

My little 9 year old nephew found these russian medals in a box in the house of his
great-grandmother who died few month´s ago.
I no expert about russian medals and so I promised him to post the medals here and ask all the experinced russian-militaria collectors about value and exactly name of the medals.

I think the first is a kind "medal for valor" and the other three are "medals for combat service".......

    Any answers would be great........

    regards
    Dominik

      Dominik-

These are some nice medals, though not uncommon. The first medal is the medal "For Valor", and the others are called either "For Military Merit" or "For Combat Service". The lower numbered ones you have were originally mounted on small, rectangular hangers, but have been converted over to the five-sided hangers. It looks like they were all stored together for a long time. Did they belong to one person? I think it would be interesting to research them to find out who they belonged to - I can help you with that if you'd like.

Your first scan was upside down so I flipped it right side up for you!

        Valor Medal # 56,951 was probably awarded June-July 1942

        Military Merit Medals:

        399, 849 about May-June 1943

        629,372 about October 1943

1,482,491 is quite likely a 3 November 1944 10 to 14 years military long service award, though it could be a "real" one only coincidentally bestowed in the same general time period.

THREE MMMs would be quite bizarre-- I've never seen more than two to one person.

Thank you very much for your answer and it would be great if You can help me with the research, NavyFCO.
You are right the badges were a long time together in the box, but I do not think that there are all belong to one person.
My sister said that there were over 30 badges in the box.My nephew only take this four badges with him. (The others are still in the house)

Can you also tell my something about the value of the badges, Rick ????

That is a very nice Valor Medal! But "value" is always

              1) local and

              2) what the locals are willing to PAY!

I suggest you look at our sponsor "Collect Russia"'s website link on the main menu page here for an idea of what the different varieties and variations are going for.

If this all came TOGETHER, with nothing else there, there is as Dave has said the very real possibility that all of these (and probably some missing Orders) belonged to the same recipient-- in which case splitting them up would be an act of incredibile historical and financial wrongness. The other items would certainly help judge whether these were all part of ONE group--which could be possible. And if only ONE of the Military Merit Medals belonged with that valor-- once split up FOREVER, both their values are REDUCED.

A good EARLY Valor like this would be well worth researching-- and THAT would confirm whether the other Medals belong and what sort of career the junior officer had.

This is my fifth attempt at making this post, so here goes...

                Rick-

I own a group with three MMM's. Even more interesting, the guy was an ethnic German! Unfortunately, the Red Banner and Lenin he also was awarded aren't with the group.

Was that a Long Service and two "real" ones?

Yep! Two from 1944/45 and then a post-war unnumbered long service one. I can pull the group out when I get home from work this evening and verify that.

                      Rick-

Just pulled the group out after sitting for 2+ years in storage. The group has MMM 1994879, 2856902, and an unnumbered MMM. There isn't a Lenin with the group, just a Red Star and a Red Banner. From the numbers, the first two MMM's are "real", the unnumbered one is long service, as is the Red Banner and Red Star.

                        Dominick,

At a minimum, your early serial number Bravery Medal is altered. I can't tell from your photo, but all the serial numbers may be added by a forger. The forger took later issue medals without SN's and added them. I can tell this by the number style, the "scratches" on the reverse of your photographed Bravery Medal, and the suspension ring. Bottom line: medals were Soviet post '50's issue to which a forger added serial numbers.
