Soviet Naval Hats Question

I ordered two soviet naval hats a few weeks ago and I just got them.

First let me say that when I had the movie "The Hunt for Red October" on VHS when I was a teen, I always wanted a Naval hat like the one Sean Connery had when he played "Captain Marko Ramius" and of course the whole uniform.

I bought two hats from this online store which claims that both hats are made of Sheep Fur and one from astrakhan fur.

These are reproductions but the ones I bought are really good quality and don't feel like cheap ones. The fur from #1 is very soft and on #2 the fur is also soft and very curly and everything overall looks very good expect the Chinstrap which you can tell is its like fake plastic elastic band.

I just wanted to show them off and see if y'all agree that they are indeed made with astrakhan fur or not. Either way love them both and if your wondering both cost me a total of $95.80 (not including S&H).

I bought:

1.) Fur Hat (ushanka) made with real sheep fur and leather.

This one came with a label attached to the back and you can see the string in image 3 and the actual label is in "Image 4"

2.) Captain of the 1st rank and Hat trimmed with astrakhan fur and the top is black leather.

Really?, I thought they be reproduction because inside the ushanka it has the year "2010", so I just assumed they were reproductions.

Both items are Soviet uniform parts still used in Russian Navy.
The man who sold them know about and put Soviet Navy cocardes on.
The label is "Squirrel" fur factory's label.

Is that "Squirrel" fur factory legit?, meaning that both hats are made with real sheep fur and are used by the current Russian Navy for most of their hats?.

Nothing wrong with the Squirrel or the Hat's except that, from the date of production, they need Russian Badges and not the Soviet ones. Maybe Kommandir can tell wich ones. I'm not really sure in the moment if it's the large Badge with the Eagle or just the Oval.

I don't even know the current version of the hat badge since I was told that the President of Russia (Dmitry Medvedev or was it Putin?.), signed some new military uniforms regulations but I did find some photos from years past and I counted about 5 different hat badge versions and was told that the one former President Putin (photo below) wears is the correct one but not to sure.

Here is a Russian Winter Hat I traded with a Russian Coast Guard enlisted sailor last year. It is the same leather/fur type material.

The leather portions feel thin. It would not surprise me if it is Soviet Surplus, as it feels and smells old.

Where did you see the date stamp in your caps?

I noticed while working with the Russian Coast Guard, they had a mismatch array of cap insignia. Some had the Soviet Star on their Cocade, while others did not. The guys wearing the star were a mix of various age groups, so this was not a carry-over from the old hands. I dont think that they really cared one way or another.

I thought those karakul hats weren't used after 1991. Speaking of which, these pictures here...are they Soviet or post-1991? The chinstrap buttons are strange.

Here is a naval admiral's hat dated 1980. The lambs wool covers the entire hat and top.

that is a fine looking hat and the hat badge seems huge but nice. all I got is this version with the eagle plus a free gift badge.

As I understand it they are still in used today only by Captain of the 1st Rank and Admirals.

The buttons are strange but they look more like a replacement since a single "Naval Anchor" buttons are supposed to be used by Captains First Rank or naval colonels (O-6) while on an admiral's version, you can find two "Naval Crossed Anchor" with the Soviet Arms.

Thanks for the input, richard. I've been using that site you linked to as well and from there I understand also that the capt 1st rank used the french wire embroidery hat badge instead of the metal one? Also, are those buttons easy to replace?
