    Soviet Trench Periscope

This is an interesting Model TR 4, 1941 Soviet Army trench periscope often seen in use by sniper teams. This one is complete with its more uncommon hard case. It's missing the strap and the case closure strap is broken but otherwise is complete with an extra eye piece and a cleaning cloth.

contents list inside lid and detail of marking. These were used in Vietnam and sometimes found reworked for export. This one was obtained in Germany in the 1980's from a German WW2 veteran's estate.

I think they got thousands after the invasion of the SU.
Igot some of them directly from Storage in the Early 90's. They sold them very cheap in these day's. I think it was 40 Marks, so about 20 euros.

Hi Ralph, Yes! This Soviet trench telescope clearly showed the date 1941 on its marking on this telescope in the picture. You can see 1941 date clearly in the picture. Cool WW2 Soviet trench telescope!!! I like it! Thanks,James

James thanks much for your post...

So did these scopes continued to be used during the Cold War?

Yes, Still in the 80's. They had no reason to phase out stuff, what is still working.

How long did they continue with manufacture? I have one that looks the same as the one posted but it has no dates and no hammer and sickle. The only markings are :
                  TP(r)
                  N(i)07310
                  And a 9 under a diamond.
The pouch has a production stamp that is unfortunately illegible.
Is there any way to determine the era it was made?

There are so many of these with "1941" marked on them I have begun to wonder if the "date" is actually more of a model number or something.

Either that or 1941 was a very busy year for trench periscopes and after that date the factory closed down....

So why did I come across a TR periscope 1945 dated and there are lots of them around?

Maybe they built a new factory? Itseems like a piece of equipment that would have been widely used and they must have been manufactured for a long period of time.

I've seen these dated 1941, 1944, 1945 and 1947 (soviet ones). THe polish ones are either total soviet reworks or new production but they are marked in the 1950s. I suspect they are a mix of both because I know the russians started making the TP-8 as early as 1945.

To the earlier post, the diamond indicates it was reworked at some point.
