                    Tyler,

The first one is to a winner of social competition of 1974. This is a pin that a regular Joe worker could get.

The second one is the badge for 25 year jubily for the Great Patriotic War.
This one was the most popular badge a veteran would wear on a regular basis.

                    Rusty.

                      Nikolai Ivanovich Petrov

Is this the group you just got from Ashkelom?

A 1985 jubilee Patriotic War 2nd Class indicates that he was a WW2 veteran, but did not receive a decoration during the war. He was a long time resident of Mogilev, from the documents.

The 1974 document is for being a winner in that year's annual nation-wide "Socialist Competition." I sold a similar group to Jeff McCulloh, with the badge, so perhaps he can scan it for you-- I'll ask. the little letters under the badge indicate the branch of competition-- looks like PETROLEUM industry to me. (If you could enlarge that part....)

The little document is for the 1970 Ministry of Defense WW2 Victory jubilee badge... and by an amazing coincidence, you will find a nice little thread started on THAT.

I'm not sure what the sloppily entered highest rank on that line should be-- "L----T Zapasa" is, I'd think, "Lei'tenant" (our 2nd Lieutenant-- they had THREE grades, this one had two stars side by side parallel to the shoulder seam on a shoulder board with one colored line up the center) and "of the Reserve" indicates that he was under age 60 in 1970--

even when discharged, Soviet men usually remained classified in the reserve until release from all military recall obligation and "retirement" at age 60... even if they'd been actually discharged for decades!

Thanks allot Rusty and Rick! This info really helps!!!

                        Hey Rick!
Yes this is the group that came from Ashkelom, i am really surprised that it got here as quick as it did!

Did they receive these OGPW for actions they preformed in the war, and the Soviet Government was just alittle late in awarding it? But I have been hearing allot about this "1985" Version of the OGPW, was there a big catch up in the awarding of these Orders in that year?

Thanks again for all the info!!!

Oh yes, here is the close up

I need new glasses! Not "petroleum," "central!"--

"Badge established by the Central Committee of the CPSU, Council of Ministers of the USSR, "VTsSPS" (I dunno what these initials stand for) and C(entral) C(ommittee) of the "VLKSM" "--- commonly referred to as the Komsomol, Soviet youth front.

Maybe Jeff better post his DOCUMENT too.

The 1985 jubilee awards of the OPW were simply that-- jubilee awards made to all surviving veterans. That type is easily distinguished from "real" ones by being made in one piece, including the hammer and sickle (pinned on with rivets in the actual "decoration" versions).

1985 OPW 1st Classes went to retired generals and admirals, veterans who received decorations during WW2, war invalids, etc.

For instance, here is a ribbon bar to a former Partisan, who received a Red Star and two Valor Medals during the war. From the 1985 and 1988 Jubilee Medal ribbons, we can tell that his OPW 1st Class in top position was of the 1985 Jubilee variety-- if he'd been decorated with one during the war, he'd have TWO of that ribbon here in the late 1980s.
