Soviet/East Bloc Helmet?

This came in recently and, where I'm not really a helmet guy & certainly not a collector or Soviet gear, I don't know the first thing about these things. Would appreciate any insight on it so I might try to find it a good home.

Any comments or insights would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx in advance, Rick

              final shot

I see not markings like one might on a German helmet. I hope someone can ID this lid.

              Thanx again. RC

Portuguese? I'm ashamed to say I never even gave a thought to the Portuguese having an army...

Any idea on the period? Would it be post WW2 or prior?

                  Thanx, Rick

Portugal was officially neutral during WW2. The helmet is a 1940 model. Not sure if they were actually issued in 1940 but were in use by 1941. Many were up-dated in the early 1960’s with a U.S type suspension liner (not a separate liner as the U.S helmet, but leather and chinstrap replaced with <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><ST1U.S type webbing). Those are known as M40/63’s and I believe used at least through the mid-1970’s, if not much later. Yours has not been modified into an M40/63. They are not real common, but not rare either.

yes, a Portuguese M40. you can get one off Ebay for about $40. like mentioned, they are not often seen but hold no collectible value... neutral country booty is like that
