    Var.1 Capture of Belgrade ?

I've seen three medals lately of this medal, one on the site collect Russia which looks like my example.(Well I think so....mine may be fake?)

And two in Germany one from the source who supplies Collect Russia with a lot of his medals, and one from that source in a collection.

For a medal that was only in circulation for a short period and then recalled there seem to be two styles ? The round eye soldered on to the medal type (Var.1) and the 'U' shape block integral ring.

I thought the latter ring was more commonly found on the late 40's early 50's medals ?

I know this is faked (aren't they all) and seems to be one of the ones to get, so to speak. Could two variations have existed in such a short space of time of issue, and how on these can you tell the fake's ?

It's been noted unlike the other Capture of ......... medals, these so far always crop up with a smooth obverse and not pebbled, any thoughts on that ?

This is mine fake or not I don't know but it appears there could well be two variations of this, not exactly a revelation but any ideas on these medals ?

    Kind regards,

    Marcus

              Marcus,

The new fakes of Belgrade, Odessa and Sevastopol are so good that it's nearly impossible to tell the difference without holding the actual medal in your hand.

Your's looks OK but there are a few things that I don't like.

                Hi Rusty,

I've had this a few years now, I don't know how recent the fakes are or when they appeared on the market. I believe they are even made in Russia ?

What are the points you don't like out of interest, I did think the ring was suspect until I saw one on Collect Russia all the others I've seen and accepted as original had the U shape or block ring.

Does anyone have any pictures of there's or the known fake/s ? I tried to locate a site which sold these from an old thread, but I couldn't find it.

                Kind regards,

                Marcus

                    Marcus,

I don't want to scare you... These days we must treat each Belgrade, Odessa and Sevastopol as fakes.

With that said; I think your border might be a tad thick. The wear patterns are weird.

The 3 medals above were reported being seen as fakes right after the fall of Soviet Union.

I would suggest contacting a reputable dealer for his opinion. You could also post it in the Soviet Awards forum where there are a few guys that are very good at spotting these fakes but even they will say the same thing as me...

If you want a 99.9% yes or no answer you could send it to Paul McDaniel but it'll cost you between $50 and $75 to find out.

Sorry for not being more helpful but these 3, Hero of Soviet Union Gold Star and Glory 1st class are being coined now with such expertise that you'll need a microscope to spot the real from fake!!! This is not a joke, last time I spoke with Paul McDaniel he said the new fakes are that good and its minor die characteristics that fakers can't copy are the only way to tell them apart!!!

                    Rusty.

                      Wolfen,

Yugoslav/Balken's medals, it depends on the era pre 1921 post 1945, then again in 1980 I believe there were modifications and so on, I don't know what medals there were from 1990 onwards on any of the sides. I've only ever seen the high end awards in collections and drawings of the medals.

                      Thanks Rusty,

It's getting as bad as the German awards now, I may just take your advice on sending it away is it possible to pm me the details of how to send it to P. McDaniel I'd rather be safe than sorry no matter what it costs or outcome. Looking at my records this medal cost me 35 pounds in 1998.

                      Kind regards,

                      Marcus
