Comrade From The Twilight Zone: A Brezhnev Era "Military Advisor"

We have encountered Comrade Polkovnik Vozhachenko in these pages before:

With the rare first "mirror reverse" Order for Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR 3rd class:

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ht=Vozhachenko

and in combat operations in Vietnam:

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ht=Vozhachenko

His top row of medals looks routine enough...

    Nothing startling in 1965. But wouldn't it have been nice to have UNITS instead of these "Feldpost number" stamps? :;

Hey! Somebody granted my wish! Comrade Captain Vozhachenko is attending the Frunze Military Academy in 1968!

        fast forward ten years...

        no, sorry...

        make that twelve years...

Full colonel now! Way to go, Anatoly Aleksandrovich!

        But nothing to see here.

I've been trying to read the stamp.

I just can't make it all out, even though I printed it out on a color printer and tried to discern all of the letters.

No, you don't need to read the stamp-- it's only one of those anonymous "Feldpost" unit number designations.

Step back: you're focussed in too tight.

There is actually a Part Two directly related to this, but I'm building up the dramatic tension. Maybe I'll let another day click off the calendar.

                Hmmmm.....

Well, it seems a little unusual that his 50th anniversary medal was awarded in the anniversary year of 1968, yet his 60th anniversary medal, which would have been appropriately received in 1978, was not awarded until two years later, in 1980.

So perhaps the Colonel wasn't around to pick his up in 1978, having been delayed by his commitments elsewhere?

Same comment as Bill: strange that he was awarded the 60th anniversary medal 2 years after the fact. I also find it strange that the award book for that medal does not have the name of the person who signed it, only a signature.

Correctemundo!!!!! While old veterans routinely waited a year to get these, ACTIVE DUTY personnel were First In Line to get them.

                    But Colonel V. wasn't... around. In 1978? In 1979??? Waaaaay into... 1980!?

I have, upon occasion, seen RED stamps used apparently at random in the MILITARY. But their stamps are almost always purple. RED is a... State Security color. The sort of color a feller who didn't put his rank or title or print his name out might be using. Hmmmm!!!!!!

                    The plot thickens!

                    For Colonel V. ALSO received:

Now Red Stars are not particularly noteworthy after they ceased being bestowed for mere 15 years of service in 1957... but AFTER that date, there are more than a few Generals even who never got one...

That's just the light on the scan above. Serial number isn't scratched or altered as it may appear falsely to be.

August 12, 1980 - same date he received his 60th anniversary medal...

Oooooooooooooooo! SPOOKY, huh? A "normal" delay for Orders in this period would be weeks or sometimes mere days... not EIGHT MONTHS!

And now let the speculation on why and where Comrade Vozhachenko was, from 1978-1980...

                            commence!

Well, the most obvious choice would be Afghanistan, as "advisors" were there in 1978, with a large additional group sent there in March 1979. Good colonel could also have been in number of African countries, helping Cubans; going from memory, Cubans/Soviets were most active in Angola and Ethiopia in 78-80.
